I want to build a silkie coop that is not too, small, i can build for preferable under $30, or can be built using things around the yard. I want to keep around 5-10 silkies in the coop. I have some chicken wire and some t posts to build a run, if that works, but i need some ideas! Upcycled chicken coops would be great.

For silkies height is of no importance to the birds as they are a nonflying breed so any materials can go for width and length. Height is only important for the owners ease of use. When a person looks around their home and uses a bit of imagination a unique coop can be the result.

Being retired on a fixed income that is exactly what I had to do when a storm destroyed my serama coop. The coop below is made using 4-4x4 uprights, 2x2s, heavy planks for the roof, a tarp, metal and plastic screen, pine needles and leaves, black soil, plants from around the yard, and a great deal of labor. All the materials were around the yard, in our greenhouse, but mostly from a junk pile.

The south side is completely open to the sun-screened over.

The plants have grown considerably since this picture was taken. By fall I'm hoping the sides will be completely covered in Ivy, honeysuckle, and hummingbird vines.

Wow! I have looked around my yard and there is a shed I can possibly use, but my family doesn’t approve of turning it into a “musty, wet chicken coop”. Which I can see. I would need to clean it out often, which I do anyways. I’ve been keeping an eye out for things I can possibly turn into a chicken coop.

Sometimes a person can get wood pallets cheap or free from local businesses. Pallets could be used in a variety of ways to make a coop. Check with your local feed store or any businesses that get items shipped on pallets-furniture, appliances, etc.
