Happy Hollidays!! I have a silkie youngster that seems to have a scab all around her vent. I noticed it a while ago and thought it was just poo, but today decided to clean her up. She has a LOT of fluff and the poo just sticks to it. This is my girls ONLY little female and we are doing our best to fix this problem of hers...has anyone else had this happen if so what did you do to fix it? I know this is painful to her as she squawks each time she goes. I cleaned her up with Johnsons baby shampoo and put some neo on it...any other ideas? Something better? Please let us know...thank you all for your time on this matter...

Any other signs of illness? Could be raw from diarrhea - maybe some moldy food or something gross she ate. I'd keep her in a warm dry spot by herself for a bit with extra attention and watch her. Give her some small gravel to see if that might help move something through?

She is the only female. Is she in with a bunch of males? If so that is probably the problem. They are mating her too much and you will need to remove her from males.

Thank you for the fast reply...She is only a few months old and there are a few little males or so we think that is what they are.. They are not of breeding age yet, but you know I bet you are right about the diarrhea, she did have that when we first went to the PO to pick them up. And I never checked the vent area. The people we bought them from are known for their silkies and they are the fluffiest I have ever seen. So, it was hard to see through all the fluff untill it started to get sort of matted to the rear end and surprise! I found the sore spot. Thanks for the advise and I actually have not given them gravel before. So I will get right on that also..

Or sand depending on how young they are. You can buy in small bags at pet store. Another trick for getting fiber to small breed youngsters is peat moss. Just make a dusting box from it. They will both dust in it and eat it. Might also try yogurt to get some good culture going in their guts. Good luck.

(Just a little bit of yogurt 1x per day for 2-3 days is all. Non-layers shouldn't have too much of it.)
