A friend is raising black silkies. The rooster with the hens are all pure breed. I hatched the eggs last week, and out of the 8, 3 were black, 4 are light grey, and 1 that is striped. Is this normal with silkies? and will the colors change?

I also got eggs from the rhode island red hens who mated with the same black silkie. I got 2 of them that are a little larger than the others and are currently Yellow. I wonder how those will turn out.

It looks like at least one of the black silkies is actually blue. The depth of blue can vary from light to almost black. Blue x black results in blue and black offspring. The first chick is blue. The second is either a splash (from a blue x blue breeding), or recessive white. I would guess splash but you will know when more feathers come in. The last is partridge. One or both parents is hiding that under the black.

Thank you, I'm looking forward to them maturing. It is possible that one of the mothers is actually blue silkie, but they looked all black silkies to me.
