I found these silkie chicks that a friend of mine has just hatched. I haven't seen them yet in person, going to pick them up next week. I am mostly just curious...

I know they have a white silkie Rooster, I am not sure if they have silkie hens though. So the mama might not be a silkie. Or they might have ordered the eggs or something, I guess I will find that out later when I pick them up. I am guessing they had them in an incubator, I don't think a hen raised them. There are only 5 chicks.

I thought they were like a red/brown/partridge color at first. But now I think it is just the lighting, they kinda look black/blue/brown.

If they look pure silkie, what color do yall think they will be? I thought the white rooster would be dominant, so it's odd that they are dark colored...I did get an adult blue silkie Rooster from them earlier this year, they had two roosters and only wanted one. So maybe they have other dark silkie hens too that I didn't see? Anyone know the color genetics that go with that?

If not pure silkie, what will their feathers look like? Regular, silkie feathers, or something like a frizzle, maybe a mix of it all.

I am just curious mostly. What do y'all think?

I see feathered legs, black skin, crests, it looks like the right comb from what i can see. The closest bottom chick looks to have the wrong number of toes but i could be wrong. That means they could be mixed. The colors look maybe blue or splash. Keep the thread posted please and make sure to post pictures! Good luck to you and your chicks!

Thanks! I didn't even think of the toes! This is my first time with silkies, so y'all will have lots of updates. Epescially when it is time to try and sex them lol. I have been studying the other silkie gender posts, and they just confuse me haha.

But yea the one up front looks like it is missing the silkie toes. I didn't think of the black skin or feathered feet either. I just saw the little poofy heads and heard silkie, and I knew they were coming home with me haha. Silkies are pretty rare in my area, I was almost to the point of ordering hatching eggs before I found these.

Can't wait to pick them up, and I'll be able to know for sure who the parents are. :)

And i agree Sexing silkies is so complicated and everyone has their own opinion on the matter and how they do it. My best advice is pay close attention to each one as they grow up and notice behavior and growth patterns for each chick and then when they are old enough to tell you can use to common knowledge of each gender behaviors and growth rates you can have a better guess more early on in the future with more silkie chicks.

They were $6 a chick. So at first I assumed they were pure silkies. But I am not so sure, doesn't really matter much to me though as long as I can use them to hatch eggs for me next year haha.

A little pricey for an unknown breed, but there's only 5 so it didn't bother me much. These people are new to chickens though, so I am not really sure where they got their pricing from lol. Not sure if the higher price means pure silkie, or they just made up a price hahaha.

Could you post pictures of their color with out the red light. :)

Oh My Goodness! Babies are here and they are precious!

They all have black skin, all have the extra toes, all have feathered feet. And some have really big head poofs.

Said they were born black but are turning grey, so my guess is they are blues?

Not sure what the feathering should look like at this point. But they do have a frizzle look, kinda curly messy feathers.

They are so dark they don't really show up in pictures. Tried to get a few with different lighting. They have the cutest little round chubby faces! If y'all can tell I am very happy how they turned out. I wasn't really sure what to expect.
