Silkie Color and gender ??

Never heard of a blueback splash, it's just a mix. As far as sex, if that's female I would be very suprized, like mentioned above, the streamers and large comb pretty much says it for me. A vaulted skull has nothing to do with streamers, not sure what she was trying to prove there, males and females can be vaulted, it just gives the apperance of a larger more upright looking crest. I truly think it's a male:(

The person meant Blue Black and Splash - aka BBS, so they were saying it was a BBS bird. The parent was either a Blue, a Black, or a Splash bird.

Sorry but they're definately both male. Having a parent that I'm guessing the breeder meant as a bbs and not blueback splash doesn't in any way indicate sex as blue is not sexlinked. They have decent type, but they wouldn't go anywhere in a show as they're a mixed color. The chicks have male patterning to them, so I'd guess that they're all cockerels as well.

Well, nothing like getting an education after the fact.

Thanks for all your help!
How/where do I learn more about silkies?

There are also several yahoo groups devoted to silkies.

Silver in the hackles of a black or blue bird is undesirable unless you are wanting a pretty pet. It is more common on males than on females. Colour on the wings as in the bird on the right is a male trait. It simply does not occur on females.

Male pattern areas are the hackles, shoulders, wings, saddle; conversely, females get colour on their breasts, and patterns on individual feathers, which are somewhat limited in males.
