Hi everyon
I have a black Silkie hen and a black Silkie rooster. One of my Wheaten Marans hens went broody so I decided to let her hatch some of the Silkie eggs. I now have 6 adorable Silkie chicks. Heres the catch... I have no idea what color they are. Three are black but two look like brown chipmunks with strips down their back and one is a really cool grey color. I also have blue, buff and white Silkie chicks that I bought from a breeder in the same brooder. The grey chick is not white or blue and I have no idea what to call the brown chipmunk chicks.
I guess I just assumed crossing a black hen on a black roo would get me all black chicks. Any ideas what these guys will turn out to be?

Thanks! I might be able to post pictures of the chicks if needed.

Is it normal for a black silkie crossed on a black silkie to produce other colors?

No. Black X black should give all black chicks. Any chance some other rooster got to the hen, or some other hen laid the eggs?

Sometimes a "black" is really a very dark blue. Can you post photos of the chicks and both parents?

Something similar happened to me when I hatched eggs from a black hen who was with black roosters. I wasn't actually planning on hatching any eggs this summer but she was killed this spring by ravens so I had no choice but to save the few eggs she left for me. I stuck them under my broody EE and two of the chicks are black (one doesn't have the extra two on both feet) And then there is one chick who is black with some white spots. it is really confusing me, but I'm guessing it will grow out of them and feather out black? I'm sure the parents are black, and I have shown them before under the color black and the hen did very well.

And it is in the background behind this black chick, you can really see the white on its head, wing and chest.

The only other Rooster I have is a huge BLRW Roo and there is no chance he bred the Silkie hen. My Silkie Roo is the boss and chases the BLRW Roo all over the yard. We watch our chickens alot of Ive never even seen the BLRW Roo with in 20 feet of the Silkie hen. I also dont have any other banty hens so Im sure all the eggs are hers. My two little black Silkies are so in love, they never leave eachothers side. Its pretty cute. Ill try and post some pictures of the parents and chicks later today. Thanks!
