I have 2 silkie bantams and 3 brahma bantams both lay small light brown eggs. My splash silkie was laying till she went broody in Feb. and I don't think she's laying again yet (at least I've not seen the same eggs again). but my other silkie is the same age (almost 9 months) and I have not a clue if she's laying yet.
soooo
Other than catching them in the act (which I have not seen them in the nests) how can I tell the difference between silkie eggs and the brahma eggs??
Pictures MAY help. either rounder than the other?

Bump.............

I'm guessing no one knows????

Unless you can tell the difference by size/color of the eggs, you can't be to sure. I know my Brahmas lay darker eggs, then my Silkies, but each bird varies. You can however take a look at their vent. A laying hen should show it by being more open. I have also heard of people putting food coloring on a birds vent so they knew who was laying (not sure if it actually works though).

I do that. I have a trio of silkies together right now, and I want to know which egg is from which hen, that way I know the chicks mother and father. I use blue for one hen and green for the other. It lasts about 5-7 days depending on the hen. When the hen lays the egg, streaks of food coloring appear on the egg. I use a needle-less syringe and insert it into the hens vent and slowly release the dye.

This is something no one seems to mention much and it has worked well for me pickup the girls you know are laying and press your fingers agains there backsides and feel how far apart the hip bones are and then feel the silkies. If hers are still very together then she hasn't started laying. Its worked for me but not everyone will agree. This is also an indicator of lay rate. The wider set the hips the better the layer.
