OK wait!!! You "found" a silkie on the side of the road? How on earth does that happen? I mean a silkie of all chickens. COOL..where do you live so I can drive around and look for special treats?? LOL
I have a bunch of mutt egg-layers, who I adore, and I do not know enough about special breeds to justify getting some just yet. About a month ago, a 'neighbor' (someone whose name I do not know and who lives about a mile away) stopped by to ask me if I had lost a chicken. My girls (and their roo, Jarhead) free-range it, and they're all over the place until dusk. I told her that, no, I had not lost one and that they were all accounted for. She explained that she lives right off the main dirt road, and there was a little fluffy white chicken who had been living at the end of her driveway in a drainage ditch for the past four days. She said she had asked everyone who she knew had chickens, and no one claimed him. So hubby and I went to take a look. We caught him and brought him home, and we were amazed that he had lasted for four days without being killed. It was apparent that someone had just dumped him on the side of the road because he's a roo. So that's how I found a Silkie roo. LOL! He was a pain in the you-know-what to catch, so that's why we named him Fricken. Now he's just one of the pets. He runs over to me, and hops up on my arm, and he won't let the other chickens near his sheep.

Now that is priceless! I seriously just dont get people-why get them if you dont want them -when you buy, hatch, or whatever to get them -you should always take into account a roo is a strong possibility to get-figure out what is going to happen to them when they do turn out to be roos- thanks for the great story and happy ending
It is amazing that Fricken survived. I know by now you realize, Silkies don't fly so they are easy prey. Anyone that just turns one loose to fend on their own is just mean.

Yeah, I know, it's amazing. In addition to that, those four days that he was out there alone and cold were rainy days. He was in a drainage ditch in the rain. We have coyotes, raccoons, opossums, foxes, etc all over the place, too. Not to mention the cars that go barreling on these dirt roads. We call him Fricken amazing. What a Fricken gift. He's Fricken adorable. And I'm Fricken lucky to have him.
And people who treat animals like that should be Fricken beaten.
I just added some Frizzles this past weekend. They are also adorable. They all just make me want to hug em, and squeese em and love em to death!!!!! Anyone remember that cartoon about the little girl and all the animals running and hiding from her??!!
