He/she sure is cute but I have to agree with everyone also...I don't see it competing with some of the show quality silkies that people have out there. Don't give up though...look at some of the people who sell silkies on this board. Some of them have really nice looking silkies. Just ask around in the selling threads and someone will point you in the right direction if you are wanting to show them.

The sad fact is a lot of people just pass on misinformation when they sell their stock.
I am naive enough to think they just dont know any better, not that they are trying to take advantage of you. The best thing you can do is learn about the breed you are interested in and familiarize yourself with the top breeders starting with http://www.americansilkiebantamclub.com/. Or start shopping eggbid to see what birds are going for. The breeders that have answered your post have lovely birds and have always been here to help people out which I think is very admirable. They have a love beyond money for these birds and share it. That being said a SQ Silkie isnt going to run you <$10.(not that Im saying thats what you paid-its just a general rule) They can be very expensive. And sadly, just b/c someone says they have stock from the best breeders they can still have pet quality from a top breeder and sell it on the name. People can say anything, be it a Silkie or a car education will keep you from being dissapointed.
We all have to start somewhere, and mistakes is how you learn.

Yup. I learned that lesson last fall, from a supposedly "top" breeder in FL, only to be sent chicks with mixed color, crooked beaks, and cross beaks, and single combs.
The chicks purchased were several weeks old, and they were supposed to be buff. They were colored with buff, black, gray, and blue. The cross beaks, single combs, and twisted beaks were discovered right after I opened the box. There is just no excuse, especially when they are birds and you know what you are shipping somebody.

therealsilkiechick: Nice silkies. I love the buff.

SundownWaterfowl-That is appalling. Its not like THAT was a mistake from some new to Silkies person. It is hard enough to do the right thing breeding but when someone who knows better does it it is bad for everybody. I'll have to get the name from you so if I see them on an East Coast show I can kick them in the shins. he he he
Reputation should still count for something in most circles.

Crooked and crossed beaks don't usually show up until a bird is several weeks old; if purchased younger there is no way to tell. Mixed variety is a bit easier to detect unless it is one of the many things that show up in mature plumage but not in chick down.

It's better to purchase somewhat older birds if you are expecting show potential. Even from the best of parent stock, not all chicks will be SQ.

I was reading this post as it was going along. I've been wanting to get good silkie eggs from someone on here to hopefully maybe get a chick that is SQ out of a batch of eggs. Thanks for info everyone

From reading a lot of boards, I know who that FL breeder is.

I just listed some eggs on Eggbid last night, assorted Blue/Black and White.
