So 5 days ago I went out to the coop to check on the girls before work. When I opened the door Splash came tumbling out covered in blood and non responsive. I rushed her inside to find that she had multiple bite wounds. The worst was about a half inch away from her vent and a large 1 inch piece of flesh was hanging off of her. The other wounds were around her neck under her crop and under her wing. She is healing wonderfully. I had to give her a bath on the second day because she was caked in blood and sand and the wounds were very dirty. I think that she has a cold before this happened because she is now breathing funny, (she sounds congested, like a stuffy nose and the skin behind her beak moves when she breathes.) she has had a great attitude and appetite until today. she is falling asleep in her food trying to eat but spitting it out and listless. I gave her some canned veggies which she would eat for a second then literally pass out face first in the plate. I have been giving her vetRX, putting a drop on her beak and a few drops in her water. She is on a mix of medicated chick starter, grains, laying crumble and anything else she wants (yogurt, chips, veggies, fruit etc) I'm treating the wounds with poultry would care from TSC. As precaution I fed her .03 ivermec. (in case its worms or something) any advice?????

also, she has always been super thin, she suffocated as a 5 week old chick and hasn't been right since. but she is letting her crop empty, to the point of when I come home from work and eye dropper her water her throat gurgles.

It sounds like you're doing everything you can. You already have a good knowledge of how to treat her. About the only thing I can suggest here is try and see if she'll eat scrambled eggs. They're a good source of nutrients and protein, which she'll need in order to make a good recovery. Make sure her wounds don't get infected, and as long as theyre not puncture wounds, I'd dab betadine on them to clean them about once or twice a day. Also in her water you can add sugar and pedialite for a little added boost.
I hope she makes it okay, keep us updated.

she loves her scrambled eggs and she is sunning herself and cleaning the wound. She can't put weight on her bad leg but she is trying to balance with her wings. I think she is just in pain. This picture is not the worst of her injuries, but I think that she just might make it!! Thank you!!!

about the same. standing a bit more than yesterday, and finally sleeping siting down with her head nestled in her wing. But she screams when I put neosporin on the wound. I'm sure its probably cold, uncomfortable and maybe even some exposed nerves there to shock. she ate some life cereal this morning. I ut some sugar in her water (she's getting the probiotic chick saver too) I think maybe she needs antibiotics at this point. any advice? I am a vet tech, and have broad spectrum antibiotics for dogs, just not sure what is safe do dose down for chickens

I'd actually google that if I were you. I don;t know enough about antibiotics to tell you for certain. I know a lot of people on here swear by Terramycin. I think the VetRx has some in it, are you still giving her drops of that? Whatever kind of antibiotic you give her, you shouldnt eat her eggs for a while after her last dose. Lucky you're a vet tech!! That's probably helped you a ton with saving your girl. :)

Splash didn't make it. She died today comfortably. I found her with her head nuzzled in her wing. I think that she was just too torn up and that much injury to an already weak bird was too much for her to heal. She was never right, she never laid eggs, she was super thin all her life. I think that she is better off this way. Sometimes I'd watch her in the yard and she looked sad. She couldn't keep up with the other girls and everyone was mean to her except her sister. They would push her over (she was wobbly from the brain damage) and steal her finds in the yard. Thank you for your help. If not anything else, she might be able to help others with this thread. I think that antibiotics would have helped greatly. but who knows now.

Ohh, I'm sorry.

You tried so hard, but I love your outlook on it. I still think you did a great job.
