So we just bought my son a pair of white silkies 1 1/2yrs old is what we were told and not knowing what to really look for when it came to silkies I got them.$8 for both cheap right? Anyhow so it's been almost a week and the hen STILL has not laid a single egg!!!! I put golf balls in her nest hoping that it might incourage her a bit.Noda! I'm frustrated and think she's older then what I was told. The rooster is nice looking but I'm thinking he was hatchery stock. Not alot of feathering on the feet. She told me her daughter won grand champion with him but kind of hard to believe at this point. He's not that friendly either

My son wanted to hatch out some peeps from the pair but not looking to hopeful.Any suggestions or advice?

I just bought 2 white hens about 2 weeks ago they are also about a year and a half, and neither one has laid either. I think that the move and intoduction into a new flock has them alittle shocked. That and the heat. It has averaged about 95* this last couple weeks. I posted a similiar thread recently and was told that this is fairly common. As for show quality. Not sure. If she won "Grand Champion" with him, I doubt she would have sold him for $4. I recently bought a BEAUTIFUL black SQ Silkie roo for $40, and he has never been in a show.(although he probably would do very well) So that is a little questionable.

I just figured they were quick to get rid of them because the daughter moved onto a different breed and needed the room. The mother said she doesn't know much about them and she was the one selling them.Who knows but now I have them and trying to make sence of it all

I'm just gonna buy some silkie eggs and hope for the best! He really wants to have his hen sit though and I don't see it happening since she told me shes never had the chance to.I was hoping since the breed is known for be broody she would be infact. Thanks for the help,I was thinking the same thing but like to hear others experiences and that.

I was given a Silkie hen that was supposedly a couple of years old. She was supposed to be a breeder, but had yet to lay an egg in the two years her previous owner had her. I've had her for two months, and I have four eggs from her. Well, had. They don't make much of an omelette, but I love the bird and that makes them double delicious. Try giving your hen lots of good food for egg- making, room to move, and lots of hugs. If nothing else, you can squeeze an egg out of her.

She has plenty of room to roam and I give them all extra treats and my son is always given them bugs he finds.I was told she laid an egg a day (hard to believe from a silkie though) I'm not sure whatelse to do but wait and see I guess. My son can hold this hen like a baby and she doesn't even care much. How sweet

I just got 4 female silkie's off of Craigslist, about 2 weeks ago. They haven't laid yet either. I think it has to do with multiple things. Stress from the move and heat I bet are playing a big role. Just make sure they are comfie, and they'll start to lay again.

It is not uncommon after buying and moving chickens for them to stop laying for a period of time. Sometimes they don't stop at all, other times it can be up to a couple of months. Just give them time to settle in.
