Hello. I need some advice. I have a four year old silkie who has been loosing weight. I was advised by a vet that she didn’t need worming as it was only her and her sister ( who passed last week) so she hasn’t been wormed!

However, after her sister being so poorly and me investigating more it seems they DO need worming even though there was only two of them, so I started my girl on Flubenvet yesterday.

She has been through a lot of stress with all the changes. Loosing her sister and then on Sunday I got two more silkies who are in a separate run inside her run at the moment.

Today I went to see them and she wasn’t right. There were lots of runny poops in the run. She was vacant and very off colour. I have brought her in this evening as it’s so cold outside and she is so thin.

I’m really worried about her and don’t know if this is a reaction to the wormer or if it’s a toxic reaction to possibly worms dying off, as well as general stress of the last few weeks.

I am going to keep her inside for now but my main concern is whether to continue the worming treatment at this time.

She is so thin I’m thinking she needs some food to fatten her up. Equally if she has worms that’s not going to help, although I’m guessing some would have died after two days..

I’m really stuck as to what’s best to do for her bless her heart. She is my favourite girl and I’m feeling so bad and upset.

She is standing up asleep as I type so I’m guessing she must have some strength as she’s not sitting down.

Any advice gratefully received!!🙏🏼😔

What are you worming with?
What's her diet?
Did you quarantine the new birds at all?
I was using Flubenvet powder. I mixed it according to instructions although I know silkies are smaller. Could I have given her too much?

The other birds are separate to her although they can see each other.

She has always been in the thin side.

She was on a muesli style mix but I recently changed that as I thought maybe Dolly died because of a victim deficiency. I was worried they just pecked out their favourite bits and seemed to leave the pellets so I moved them back into organic small layers. So yes a change of food on top of all the other changes.

It’s now the next morning and she is still a bit vacant and wobbly on her feet but she is eating and drinking. She was very thirsty, I guess because she had the runs. I put chicken boost tonic and a tiny pinch of mineral salt in her water.

I decided not to carry on with the worming treatment for now and just to try and feed her up a bit but I feel stuck between stony ground and a hard place because if she has worms then feeding her up won’t really help the way I want it to.

If she has worms I want them gone, but she is really delicate at the moment.

I couldn’t see anything obvious worm wise but I know they can be microscopic.. she pooped a lot but it was I to a towel so I’m not sure how runny they were.

She seems really hungry and is pecking away at the pellets as I type. I have also ordered some sick chicken mix as a booster for her.

Any advice about how to proceed with the worming situation given she had two days instead of the seven would be helpful.

She is in the house at the moment and the two new ones are outside. I didn’t know whether to bring the others in and keep them in a cage next to her to keep her company The trouble is it’s winter here so the weather is against us so it’s a challenge with how long she stays in, if the others should come in and at what point can she go out.

She hasn’t been introduced to them properly so it’s not like they can all sleep huddled together.

Everything feels like quite a mess at the moment!!

It would in your best interest to hold off on the Flubenvet until your Silkie regains her strength. Continue to feed her with the supplements you're giving her and keep an eye for anything out of the ordinary in her feces.
Flubenvet is a very safe wormer. I wish we had it here in the U.S.

New birds need to be as far as possible for a month, to make sure they are healthy.
I'd give her more of those vitamins and observe.
