OK...I have a young silkie hen...so young in fact that she is not laying herself yet. I have some extra Serama eggs that i don't feel like buying an extra bator for but I would like to hatch them. Is there a way to encourage a bird to brood? Wil a silkie that is not yet laying brood? Thanks in advance.

Also...what does a good brooding box look like? Thanks again.

I have never had one go broody for me yet that hadn't started laying yet. So I don't think it is possible.
Maybe someone else on here has. good luck

I have had a silkie go broody before laying. just give her a couple of eggs to play with that you don't care about and see if she goes broody. she may not stay on them her first time. good luck

I don't know...she is around 7 months old now....so she is of laying age, just been outside in the cold, so no eggs from her. I guess I can toss a couple in and see what happens. Now, just because she starts to set, don't mean she will stay right?

Don't feel bad, you are not alone. I to have a 6 month old white silkie and she will not lay or set on eggs. I have tried quail eggs and chicken eggs and she doesnt even look at them. Hope she gets going soon wife is getting ancy. Oh and i don't just have one silkie i have three hens and two roosters.
