As a newer owner/breeder, do I need to give my silkies
any special treatment for external bugs?

I worm spring/fall, but thats it. They have day free range
on dirt yard and are cooped at night. I live in the city.

I am asking as I don't think ive had/have bugs, cannot see
any, but read a thread that some have given there other
breeds frontline.?.

Thank you in advance,
Jill

Oh no, I wouldn't give frontline. Just keep an eye on them, and treat them if you ever do find lice or mites on them. You just look at them every now and then, right down to the skin, separate those feathers and really look deep. The vent area is a good place to check, as well as under the wings......

I shake some Seven Dust around the coop each time I change out the bedding. It helps discourage any little pests.

You can use Sevin dust and dust them in it or Adam's Flea and tick spray(a squirt under each wing, bas of tail, and chest)--both can be bought at walmart or other places as well

For mites you can use Frontline spray, if you can find it. Some have reported temporary fertility issues after using it though. I use Ivermectin pour on for cattle. Anywhere from 1 to 4 drops directly on the skin, depending on the size of the bird.

Thank you to all for the info, so far it seems clear, but
I would rather be armed with knowledge than ignorance!
