As most of you know, I had to re-home most of my Silkies. One of them that I re-homed can not stand up. Cheryl says that his eyes look clear, he is still eating and drinking good and his color is good. But, he just sets on him bum all the time. She has tried to pick him up and he will fall on his face.

I thought maybe that he tried to stand on the way back to her home and may have spraddled his legs??? Or maybe he has gotten his head pecked or has hit his head. I just don't know.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wormed them about 2-3 months ago, so I have suggested that she worm him and give him some vitamin k. She has him on vit/elec in his water now.

He is about 1.5 years old.

I am sorry to hear this

Does she know if he is eating properly?
It could well be that he hit his head, or held the wrong way and he struggled.

Sad to say i did thid with a beautiful white silkie roo,
i was holding him to trim back his crest, and he struggled in my arms and like a big dummy i held him (force held) NOT GOOD.
Right after i put him down he just plopped Right to the floor, For him struggling and me being to force full holding him he popped something in his leg or hip.

For treatment we bundled him up in a towel kept him in a bow with food and water at neck reach so he did not have to struggle.
and Bayer baby aspirin 1 a day for swelling and pain.

Now what the biggest mistake we did was, did not check him bottom, it did not even cross our mind like dummys , his poop had build up and he past. that was soooo stupid and i admit that one.

so we have now a silkie with a straddle lag, she has had this since she was about 2 days old, another chick had jump on her and that when a cry out loud was herd and then that noticed.

so any way hubby made a thing out of wood for her, she sits in it with both legs tied up together and tied to a bottom piece to keep her legs together till they can and hopefully straighten out a bit.
her poop goes right threw to the bottom where i can clean it out.

Thanks Shay for all the helpful info. I am going to email her and see if she can make him one of those wooden boxes to put his legs through.

I told her to give him some aspirin for the pain. I think he sprained his legs also. He is eating good and drinking good. She fixes him eggs etc.

Hopefully, he will pull through he is a pretty boy.

Alos tell her to make sure there is a big enough hole where his poop and go right through to the bottom, and also tie up the box on the sides to a cage or something that he wont tip it over trying to move.

And you are so welcome.

Thank you so much, I was just wondering how to build the box so he didn't fall out and hurt himself worse.

You must have been reading my mind.

I find the best things are slings I had one custom made for me i will post her name in a sec. Contact her and see if you can get the patern or have one made. In the meantime propping in a box is good or making a sling out of an old shirt.

Sounds like Mareks to me (possibly a bump on the head) I would try the homeopathic remedy by moodychicken with St Johns wart and a probiotic mash with added selenium and vitamin e as its only feed. and the treatment twice a day as recomended.

eta: mamanaturale makes the slings.

LOL, Learned from experience, lol
when we put the other in he ALMOST flipped over.

That's exactly what I had pictured, him flipping right over.

AHappyChick, I thought maybe Mareks also, but his eyes are clear, no discharge of any kind, eating and drinking good. He is 1.5 years old and has never shown any signs of illness. She took about 19 of my birds and he is the only one having any problems. The few that I kept have no signs of any illness either.

I knew I should have went to Vet school

I'll tell her about the slings, she might be able to get one.

Hi, I'm Cheryl with the roo.
He seems to be a little bit better today, trying to get himself upright, has his legs under him and is wanting to groom himself.
I gave him a bath, trimmed his bottom and face so he can eat and drink better, he has a great appetite, and drinks just fine.
He is in a box in my office, seems quite happy, I have fresh bedding that I change as it is soiled, he has normal bowel movement.
He seems very alert and bright.
He is NOT spraddle legged...he just can't seem to hold himself up, but his legs don't go out to the side.
As Cammie said, no other birds are sick and none of mine have ever been sick or had any problem at all. Hers are all very healthy also.
I can't believe he was hurt by anything or anyone.....he has not been with any other birds except the ones he has always lived with. They all got along great.
I appreciate all the info and help.
I'll keep you informed and please feel free to give any advice or ideas you might have.
I have searched the internet for anything that even sounds like this....no luck.
I WON'T give up! Me and Chewy are going to lick this together and if he turns out to never be normal again then he can just be a pampered boy and have his food and water served to him like a royal Silkie, [that he is]
Thanks everyone, Cheryl
