I am wondering if a (silkie) bantam roo will mate with a araucana hen?

I got araucana's for eggs (& pets)

kids got bantams for pets (& HoffmanHatchery doesn't sex bantams)

so I wanted to know if banty roos will try & mate with a light weight chicken or can I keep them together? (I don't want to have to check eggs)

Far as I know roos will try most hens no matter what the size... just like a chihuahua will try to service a great dane grump that is lying down! Maybe someone else has better specifics... Good luck

Yes they will. My Silkie mates with my EE's and everyone else, too. Even my little Japanese bantam has a go, but usually the bigger girls beat him up...

Any kind of roo would try to mate a hen at any size. . .it's just "if" he gets a chance. . .but if the hen is bigger then she might peck him or something to get him away.

this is what I thought!

my silkie roo & hen are 7 weeks they are with 2 Araucana 5 weeks (others 3 weeks brooding separate & I am noticing some cute roos in there)

Have to keep Vickie (my silkie roo) she was my 1st chicken!

but, if you have a couple roos in the flock do you have to check (some how) the eggs when ever you get them?

or does it not matter?

Check them to see if they are fertilized?? I don't think you can tell unless you actually crack the egg open and even then a fresh fertilized egg is hard to tell if it really is. As far as I'm concerned they taste the same....yummy

These posts made me wonder if two breeds mate will the chicks be mixed? this may sound like a stupic question, but I've never heard of a "Rhode Island silkie", of a "Silkie Cochin". Just curious.

I want to keep a pair of cochins in with my silkie pair. Will the roosters be sure to fight? Right now the cochins are just 7 weeks old and my rooster stands guard over the chicks so I wonder if they will go at it when the cochin rooster is mature. I would love to keep both roosters but don't want them to kill each other.

Thanks for all your good advice. I really don't know a lot about raising chickens but I am leanrning a lot from everyone here.
