Ok I'm very new to the Silkie world but I've been told that the silkies I have are very nice. When you all are talking about their crest not being good I get confused.

I thought it was prbably a good thing to haVE A big fat poof on the roo and hens. Im wanting to start sifting out the bad ones and work on getting better birds. 1 of my roos is bigger bodied and has longer feathers on sadle, neck, feet, just about eveywhere and is taller but both are missing a nail on the outside toe. I was told this was a diqulification showing. He has the longer feather in his crest that kinda stick out and slick back. I think that is what your all talking about... maybe !!??

If so I take it thats a good thing. I would love to put a pic of mine on here for you all to pick on but, I cant yet I havent posted enough replies yet. Please tell me.... thanks

I didn't know there were a certain amount of post required before you can post pictures? Can you post some on your website? You want large crests on your males and females!

They are so purty.
Yall are making me feel bad cus I had to give mine haircuts so they could see better freeranging with the big wyandottes.
They get upset if they are left out of the fun.

Lola and Cinnimon been growing in some nice crests. (2 of the Silkie boys).

there are some good Silkies in this thread, but I couldn't help but wonder who you were referring to as "they"? the show breeders here in the U.S. or the breeders in the Silkie's homeland?

Hatchery quality silkies often have poor crests, and it seems more noticeably bad on the boys.

The standard calls for "a moderate crest." Whatever that means. I really dislike terms that are so vague. They have a place, but not is a standard. I would like to see the standard list a ratio of proportions between body, tail and crest sizes.

Missing nails are not DQs; missing toes are. Missing nails are something like a half a point each--out of 100 points total. Not a big deal unless you are comparing two nearly perfect birds.

The silkie's homeland is China (although other countries in that part of the world have similar birds). But they were imported many, many years ago. Silkies are a VERY old breed; they were one of the breeds listed in the first APA Standard in 1878. Marco Polo wrote about them, and there are other references to similar birds written by much older sources.

Standards vary from one country to another.
