Silkie roost

Do Silkies roost? If so, how high off of the floor?

My Silkies do not roost but rather prefer to huddle up in the corner of the coop on the floor.
I have various tubs and boxes in the corners of the coops and most of them take advantage of these to sleep at night.

I have some boxes and planters on the floor that I use for nests for the Silkies.
I keep about two eggs in the nests at all times to keep them laying in these nests.
Sometimes they lay their eggs on the floor.

Most of mine sleep piled up on the floor too. Seems like in every bunch, there is one that prefers to roost. For those, I would give them nothing higher than a foot off the ground. Today, for the very first time, I did see one of my 8 month old cockerels jump up onto the seat of my chair in the run , what, 2 feet?? He is the only one I have ever seen do that, and I think it surprised him as much as it did me!

One of my frst silkies (my 3rd, actually) used to roost on wire fencing that was 4' tall. Most silkies prefer to pile. Youngest and highest in the pecking order is in the center, chicks and youngsters on the bottom and the adult males around the edge. A winter/cold weather pile is very compact with a relatively small diameter. A warm weather pile is much less compact and spread out. Give them the opportunity, and some will roost on concrete blocks, low shelfs, etc. A few like to roost high up.

Yes, mine piled so tight in the winter months, it was almost too hard to tell who was where! Looked like a big old fur ball!
