hi guys,
I have a silkie rooster (definite rooster judging from behaviour and appearance) but he hasn’t started crowing yet. He is 7 months approximately and the only rooster in a flock of 8 hens. We live in suburbia but with a large backyard so we are anxious to see if/how loud he crows and if it can be heard from the house (and therefore our neighbours house). Is it unusual for him to not be crowing yet? I’m reading that most start around 4 months, though I read about one rooster that didn’t start till he was a year old. He does everything else like the wing clap and calling softly to the hens to tell them he’s found food, but no crowing yet. He even has a little ba-Kirk! Sound but it’s soft. Am I lucky enough to have a quiet/almost silent rooster?

Silkies in general can be odd chickens. Could be he isn't hormonal and confident enough to crow yet. Crowing generally is about announcing to the world you are here and own the territory. That requires confidence. It may take him time.
