Silkie rooster with scaly leg mites, yuck.

So I know that you're supposed to apply some sort of oil product to the legs, but what about the foot feathers? Don't they get all gacked up? Not that I'm worried about it looking bad (the oily feathers), it just seems like they'll be covered in oily dirt and shavings. And should I dip the feet in the liquid oil (so that all of the skin around/under the foot feathers is covered)? Or should I rub the ointment oil on and hope I get everything? Man, my Silkie rooster is going to LOVE that (not).
