Okay I found Silke club standard which indicated that Silkie Cocks weigh about 36 oz, but how tall are they? I have 5 silikes that I want to build a small coop for. I have 3 coops already, Standard, Bantam & rooster. They are all enclosed and then they are in a fenced (electric) yard. I let the bantams out first, then the standards but my silkies are still small enough to fit through the welded wire of the outer fence which is electric (I had escapees). So they need there own coop so all the others can go out and I keep them in. I want this to be a small coop I want enough room under the coop so they can walk and enough room in the upper coop so they can walk with some head room, but not so tall so I have to put the roof on with a ladder. So how tall do they get? Roost or no roost? I will hang food and water under the coop. TIA

Edited because I had typo

I keep 2 cochins in there, but in could easily hold 5. You wouldn't need it that tall, cuz silkies don't roost. Keep it one level because they don't fly either.

FWIW, I prefer my coops tall enough for ME to enter without having to stoop. Makes cleaning much easier!

I like 6' tall, but I'm only 5'2, and dh and ds's are all less than 6'. It also allows heat to rise well above the birds.

2' usually gives the birds sufficient headroom.

A little off topic, but it was said that silkies don't roost???? My girl goes up with the others everynight! I put a little step there for her, and she gets up the rest of the way on her own power

so, maybe a short roost would be good... Just a thought... But then again maybe I have the only silkie that actually roosts!

I have a problem in the big girls coop with the water inside. They would turn it over if it was on a block and make a mess or if hung up it would leak. I want the water outside the coop and in the shade so I figured under the coop would be good. If they turned it over or it leaked no problem. So my question is still how tall do Silkies get? I think I will put roost at 12 inches with nest box on the floor. So will a 2 foot tall coop be enough or will their heads touch the ceiling when they roost? Should I go 3 feet, but at 3 feet the hinged roof and clearance underneath would be too tall for me. I'm at a stand still with no ideas how to solve my multiple problems with one coop??? The others were much simpler. I can walk in one and the other has big door on the side which is waist high, but they are BIG. I want a small one. One day the silkies will go back in the bantam coop with the others when they are bigger. This would be an emergency coop/ER/confinement/broody coop one day. TIA
