Hi all! I have 2 beautiful silkie girls around 2 years old. They almost always sleep together in a nesting box and are generally inseparable. They do go broody at times but will come around quickly back to running around their enclosure.
Tonight, however, when I went to lock up the coop I noticed the girls were not together. In fact they were at opposite nesting boxes. It has been raining a lot and very damp but I have changed their straw/ bedding to get it as dry as possible for them. Neither girl was acting unusual today. Could there be something wrong with one? Any suggestions what to look out for? Thanks!

I've never had silkies but from what I've observed with our mixed flock is that where they sleep on the roosts and who they sleep next to changes frequently.

As long as they are eating, drinking, and pooping normally (just general all around behavior), I would say they are ok. Maybe someone with silkie experience will have some input on your situation.

Hope all is going well for you and it's nice to have you join us.

Hmm I thought I replied. Anyway thanks so much for the welcome and the advice. I've been a long time lurker and figured I should come out of hiding and join. We've had a flock for about 3 years now and learning so much. The forums and articles really help. Happy Easter!

You may want to post on the "Silkie thread," and see what they make of their behavior. Have they ever actually hatched chicks, or just play at being broody for a short time?

I wonder if they may be getting serious about being moms - and want their own space.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2, that would be my first guess, one of them has decided she wants to be broody and has gotten possessive about one of the nesting boxes.
