I read through your blog, and if you are super attached to this guy (which raising him indoors, you probably are) then I would honestly suggest looking into buying a chicken diaper online, probably 2 (one for now and one for when he finishes maturing) and let him be an indoor chicken pet, you can build him a mini dog house/coop in a corner of the house, and make a 2 ft little fence area of a few square feet to keep him contained - much like people who keep house rabbits do. Then of course you can let him out to roam when you can supervise him in the house or in a room, or outside. Indoors neighbors are very unlikely to hear a silkie crow, and if they do you can swear its a CD you play for your hens - say you read it helps their instincts to think they have a rooster around or something. LOL

I guess the consensus is that he's a boy... thanks everyone for your replies. About the housechicken idea, 6 months ago I would have laughed, but we are getting very attached to this guy. I've wondered how chicken diapers work out? I worry that it would be hard to keep the chicken's back feathers clean.

I just ordered one for my little frizzle serama roo that is a house pet and I see how they formed kind of like a bucket area so that the poop stays away from the feathers.

Thanks, I am very relieved! ha! Although, it would make me sure feel a lot better if the sneezy one would STOP it.

I worry every time i hear him, but he seems to act fine and is eating, drinking and is pretty happy. Since they are mostly over whatever it is they had.. and this is the only thing lingering, I ordered some VetRX so I can rub it on his beak and see if that will clear it up. He may not like me after I do that.

Agreed- your bird is a boy. My hens have very flat combs-- no crinkles in it, and they don't stick up at all. I really like the chicken diaper idea. Have you looked around at them? There are many people that are making them and they are all basically the same, but you might want to try a couple from diff companies/people to see which one you like best. They really aren't that expensive, and I know I've read a lot of great reviews on them. Be sure you really measure your Roo well. My friend just bought one for her duck, and apparently she measured a bit too big and the diaper kept falling off. I'd think a really well fitting one would be easy to use. Google in BYC.com for the chicken diapers and look through the sites.

I have found that they are amazingly forgiving.
