These birds are going to be used for my son's 4-H project this year. We are excited for them to start laying and see what we get. We are planning on showing the cockerel and pullet- they are beautiful. They are kept apart so she can stay nice looking. The little splash has some red leakage in his feathers around his face. I am pretty sure it's not staining. (I keep saying 'he' but I'm not 100% sure about him) Question about that-- I'm sad because this bird has a beautiful crest and great feathering on his feet, etc.... but because of the red, should i keep him out of any breeding pens? I can stick him/her with my layers for company. Just sad because otherwise a beautiful bird. I don't know enough about genetics to know if breeding this bird would continue a bad trait or not.
