Silkie thread!

big show season is in Fall. Then you have late winter/early spring shows but they aren't typically as big as the fall shows.

I agree with Robin, they won't improve from 'over affection' from the roosters until they molt, and they wont molt until "usually" (they are all different) between 8-12 months of age...There are other factors such as stress, forced molt, or major season change that can trigger a molt as well.

Excellent info, thank you. I should have split the sexes when I could tell the boys from the girls. I guess I'll take the best of what I've got to this show and plan better next time around.

Hi all, I'm learning a lot here - I've had silkies for a while, and I'm going to my first show in a few weeks! Nervous and excited!! Can you tell me how you transport your silkies to shows? Wire cages? Dog crates?

Anyone else on this thread showing at Hollister and Stockton?

Most use the small, hard sided pet carriers. That way they can be stacked, have handles for carrying.

sager:)silkies :

K i need help i have yet to figure this out some ppl say i have a split lavender silkie or split black silkie what dose split stand for or mean

Lavender is a recessive gene, meaning that it has no affect if present in only one copy. Birds with one copy of a recessive gene are referred to as split. There is no way to tell that the gene is present except from breeding records (one parent was lavender, or produces some lavender offspring when bred to a lavender or another spit).

Also I know a few who use the smaller plastic storage totes, cut square holes in the side and tape or ziptie wire to the sides for ventilation, and are stackable. great thing about these is you can make the hole with the wire higher up so you can add more shavings/bedding in the boxes without worrying about all the shavings being kicked all over the car like you have to worry about with the regular pet carriers. Also much cheaper than pet carriers. lol
