Silkie thread!

That pic is about as sweet as they come. This is the kind of birds I'm hoping for, sweet and docile. Just need them to also be on a the quieter side. I'm not breaking any laws or anything, just don't want to have issues with my neighbors before I have a chance to win them over with free eggs. ;-)

All of the birds are on the quiet side. The silkie is actually the loudest. But she is only noisy right after she has laid an egg. It isn't anything horrible for noise though. The Orpington is really sweet and gets along great with my other girls. There was a bit of jostling for position, but they worked it out quickly.

And thank you! My daughters LOVE their chickens. All of them, apart from the little Sebright, love attention and love to be held.

I'm in the NW suburbs of Chicago. I'm willing to travel a little ways for the right animal.
Our Anatolian came from 6+ hours away. While I'm likely not going to travel that far for a chicken I am willing to travel some. Maybe Northern Indiana, North Central Illinois, Southern Wisconsin, maybe Western Illinois as well. I guess within a couple of hours of my home.

If someone has suggestions I'd love the ideas.

Wanted to add that the prices aren't scaring me.

I'm wondering how one might "unload" males? What's a person to do if they have a male and need to not have a male? Is it easy to find a trade or sell it or gift it to someone? I just wouldn't want any animal of mine going to the wrong place that won't treat the animal well.

You can find people off of things like Craigslist, poultry swaps, or there are often 4H kids looking for extra birds. If you don't mind not making any money off of him, I would just try to "unload" males to 4H kids for free. Especially with silkies, there isn't really a huge chance of people taking them in to have them for dinner.

Though they are considered a delicacy in parts of Asia.

This person has a silkie hen and some other hens near you. I'm trying to think if there are any "regulars" around here who breed silkies near you.

We're hoping to get into 4H and would love to participate with our chickens and dog (hope to make that dogs in the future) so maybe just getting involved will help us find a place for the boys.
Thanks.

It certainly does. 4H has been a great resource and learning experience for us. My little Sebright cockerel is going to a new 4Her. We can't have Roosters either so he was needing a new home. We got him at 4 weeks and he turned out to be male *sigh* Wasn't too hard to place him at all.

Yeah, I'm "unloading" two of my pet quality silkie roosters. I'm pretty darned sure this person is going to have them for dinner! LOL Ah well, I can't keep everything! Just put an ad on Craigslist with a picture. I'm practically giving away my roosters at $5 a piece. Now if they were show quality, or even a super nice breeder quality, I would list them here to ship. But so far, I don't have anything I'm giving up right now. That's good the prices aren't scaring you! I paid $150 for my first nice pair of silkies.

Totally worth it!

If you haven't been in 4-H before, contact your County Extension Office. They should have a 4-H department there or know who is in charge and will tell you which club is closest to you! :) You can join at any time, but most projects are almost over. But that doesn't mean you can't go ahead and dive right in anyway. There are still a lot of things going on right now.. we have our county fair coming up in July and then our State fair in Sept. We had several spring poultry shows.
