Silkie thread!

I have some picture updates today. Got a few funny ones too! I decided to let the silkie chicks out today since I know I can catch them and they can't fly over our fence!

OMG!! Einstein looks like one of your daughters stuffed toys. Just sooooo cute!!! Who could resist a silkie after seeing these photos? Scrambled is really looking great!

Hi All. I have a group of Silkies (14) that are now 8 weeks old. Lord I can sit with them for hours at a time, they are great fun. From what I have learned from this site, a red comb is an absolute no-no, and one of my favorites- a redish roo, exhibits that trait. He is really outgoing and fearless and beautiful, but I want to breed the best that I can so I guess if anyone is looking for a funny little pet, he is available. I'll post some pics next week and ask everyone to weigh in on possible colors. Don't stone me

but I purchased them from McMurrays, and surprisingly, some of them are looking fairly good. I live in Easton , MD if anyone would like the boy for a pet. Thanks to all the people here who love their chickens and offer their experience and knowledge to draw from! Carol Heisterhagen

Hi I am new to this thread--trying to get the whole thing read, but burning the candle at both ends......I'm on page 58, plus reading all the new posts since about page 204?. I hope to be hatching some silkies really soon, but have some other breeds now. My problem is flies......has anyone used Red Lake Earth Diatomaceous Earth with Calcium Bentonite? If so, how does it work for you? I've read mostly good stuff, but did read two not so good review regarding chickens. I had planned on buying the garden and poultry dust, but this seems to offer more benefit. I'm concerned for my present birds, and of course, my future silkies.
TIA
I use the Diatomaceous earth in my coop. It not only kills the flies, but dries up the poop really quickly so there is no smell. It is also suppose to kill lice and mites and when they eat it, kills parasites. I really like it. Make sure you get the food grade kind. I do the deep litter method and so far it has worked great. Probably won't have to clean the coop until Sept! And, then most of that is already partially composted and will go into my compost until next spring.

Peep, thank you so much! Einstein has really turned out to be pretty. we had to trim the beard and the top again. Keeps growing and growing hair. She still is very stand-offish, until you scoop her up. Then she just sits really nice in your arms. I thought scrambled is better looking, its still looks kinda weird from certain angles. lol

Oh Skyl3r! You chicks have changed soooo much since their baby pix! Especially Scrambled!
Thank you so much, Einstein is getting a lot of grey splashes and streaks lately.

Adorable skyl3r! Just got my first pure Silkie chicks in the mail today. My little mix made me fall in love with them. I'll have to get some (not nearly as awesome) pictures up tonight.
Thank you!

Gorgeous! Love the 1st picture of Trinity & Einstein.
I love that one too! the little smirk on Trinity's face, she was so happy Einstein was in the sandbox!
