Silkie thread!

Hi all.

Quick Gray Silkie question: Can you sex the youngsters based on their head coloring?

I see the std of perfection states a males' head to be Dark gray and the females' to be Chinchilla gray.

Does this mean that pullets have lighter colored head feathering, or just that a dark gray headed female would not be show-worthy [and vice versa with a male].

Thanks!!

...perhaps if I add some pictures?!.....

[apologies if any of you replied and somehow I missed it!]

SEVIN DUST vs. DE?
So I've read stories about using the sevin dust for killing mites/lice. Some people seem to like DE.
What is the difference between these two products? Isn't sevin dust a pesticide?
Do both products also kill the possible eggs on the birds?

I found some lice on some of our birds a while back, used the poultry duster. I'll have to check them again to make sure all critters are dead.
I accidentally just came across something about DE and thought to myself what's the difference between sevin and de..?

I would think food grade DE is the safest thing to use on anything. I'm trying to stay away from chemicals in and on anything. The chickens get organic feed and all my gardening is done that way. Just my opinion :}

I prefer Sevin dust, DE has never worked for me, neither works on eggs. Both can be sprinkled in the dust bath area can aid in their own deterring of mites...DE is supposed to be all natural, BUT inhaled it is just as dangerous as sevin if not more so to the respitory system of birds and humans. DE is tiny shards of sharp silica, and can damage lungs if inhaled. Sevin is a pesticide, and should be used sparringly, best used in the coop mixed in the bedding and sprinkled directly on the bird, or in dust spots...Some use DE as a wormer, or claim it can be used as a wormer, but once its wet it is useless, also I *believe* its been disproven as well....I remember reading up on it when it wasn't working for me.

For mites/lice I use sevin in dust spots and coops, and on birds directly I use permethrin or adams flea and tick spray either one is the same thing you use on dogs for flea/tick control and works well on mites/lice.

Sherbert is an "Oops bird" that I am trying to re-create. Genetically speaking he is a Splash Partridge, and is about 10 months old now.

Titus is a Partridge, he is just at 6 months old, still young and alot of filling in and growing up to to do still.
