Silkie thread!

Should I not let my girls free range if there are mushrooms in my yard? It has been really rainy and there are some large mushrooms popping up so I haven't let them roam for fear they may eat them. Would they be toxic?

a little off topic, but I can't for the life of me, figure out how to edit my signature. I've done it before, a few times. But I can't find it now, I've looked the past 2 days. i am officially losing it :) we had to put a chicken down this morning :( and I need to update my signature with the new silkies and losing this one.

Oh honey so sorry never easy to loose our babies :( I too cannot recall how I did it, sorry can't be of more help.

Good Morning! A while back I was concerned about my newly crowing rooster having a "too small comb". Well, it turned out that BB was just a crowing hen (she started laying eggs the next week).

Now, I'm wondering what to do if a rooster's comb is "too big"? My splash cockerel/rooster is getting such a big "honker" on him. I fear between the comb and crest, his eyesight may be blocked? It really looks like a walnut glued to his head....poor guy. But very handsome in the Silkie-World, I'm sure!

Should I pluck the feathers around his comb and eye area? We probably will show him in 2013 if he continues to develop nicely. I'll post a picture of him. Leo Pierre is such a sweetie and has the calmest temperament. My son could even use him in kids' showmanship, but I want to enter him in the adult competitions............so we'll see.

Here is a closeup of Leo Pierre's walnut comb. He is about 6 months old (with a lot of maturing yet to go)

And, this photo was just for fun. I put our newest "splash chick" beside Leo Pierre just to see the size comparison.

They grow up so fast.

I have some pet silkies that I ordered from Ideal about 3 months ago and some of them I can't tell what they are. Some are beginning to crow. They have been playing in the dirt after a good rain so, please excuse their dirty appearance. I couldn't deny them a little fun in the dirt-not when they love it so much. lol.

What are you guesses on these sweet babies?

This is Cotton. I'm saying girl.

No name for this one. Not sure. I think roo but doesn't look like my other roo.

This is Chip. He is definitely the silkie roo.

This is Blackhead. And he is mean. Mean to all of the others. He was sent with our silkie assortment but as you can see his comb is not walnut like Chips.

No name yet. But I'm thinking girl.

No name yet. I think roo. It kinda looks like Blackhead but then again the comb is not quite the same nor is it quite walnut. It's personality is really shy.

This is Crayola. The colors on his cheeks are such a vibrant blue that it reminds me of a crayon. He's a sweety pie.

No name yet but I think roo.

I'm sorry about the quality of the pictures. I'm not the best picture taker in the world. If you can't tell, I'll try to get a better one. I tried to let them do what they do naturally so you could see them better. As you can see, I think I got a pot load of roos. So far, everyone gets along except Blackhead. He has even pecked me and he's only 3 months old! These are just pets and we love them dearly. They are the most precious things. When they see me coming on the golf cart (usually with feed), they run waddle straight to me when they are free ranging. They are so funny.

This is the best I can do for the time being, so lets hope it holds

Otherwise they will be living indoors. Also I have tested the coop for predators, I intentionally set my friend's dog on the coop because she was completely crazy about getting in and killing them. Before anyone says anything she WAS on a leash just a loose one so she could test for weak spots. Needless to say she couldn't get in.

I think it's a cute coop little house for them. I had igloos while I finished up the coop, but the Silkies didn't go in them, just piled outside. The other breeds of chickens figured it out :) Anyway, I kept them in when it was REALLY hot, and brought them in at night. That's just because I kept them in the house until they were 4 months old ;) . Finally let go, and they are sleeping outside. I lock them in a shed/converted coop at night. _Pam

I got my ideas from others here on this site. don't know why some of the pics loaded up sideways. I spent a pretty penny building it, but its better than store bought in my opinion. last hatch was 25 of 28 eggs, silkie anyways, I have had trouble with other chicks. think it must be my other chickens eggs/fertile.

Nice setup!

I do agree with the vents and she's gonna put a flap on the door. Just wanted to mention that the house is very cute, better than mine were. :) -Pam
