Silkie thread!

Colie <3 :

So this morning I dropped the lid of my Brower and broke three silkie eggs

I had yanked the lid off really fast because I noticed the temps were edging up over 102. I had a stupid egg o' meter in there that was only reading 98.9 and the temps were almost 103 with two different thermometers at eggs level, geez oh pete! I'm beginning to think none of them are going to hatch

Dont worry, Ive read ppl saying a short while at that temp they will still be ok. Hate when that happens!

I really should have run a test hatch before I ordered all of the eggs I have now. I just reasoned that I didn't know what to do with the test hatch chicks after they hatched if I got them locally they wouldn't be a breed I wanted to keep. Now I'm thinking my reasoning was bunk and I should have just gone ahead with it and sold them on craigslist... urghhhh

Hey Gavin I am lurking on this thread hoping one day to have some silkies. I have 2 chicks in the house now one is 10 weeks old the other will be 8 weeks this Sunday , they aren't silkies but I think if the temps stay in the 40's and they are good and feathered then I am going to move mine outside this next week.

My babies start inside the house atop the dryer, then graduate to the back porch and through a couple of cages/hutches there, then finally into the yard. Once in the yard they have a heat lamp. During the winter, heatlamps were on 24/7; at this point they are on dusk to dawn. I really play it by ear and watch and listen to the babies and their activities--to sleepy and the heat is lessened, too loud and I give them more heat.
