Silkie thread!

OK, so my friend is going to most likely move away, which makes me cry, and she is one of my chicken friends. She wants me to take her 2 silkies. But, I got 3 really nice ones and I dont know if it would be bad to take those silkies, what if they breed and then the quality is all messed up? I mean, the ones she has don't look bad. But the lines that we got are catdance/hat trick/something else. and I know they're supposed to be good. I love the idea of helping her out and getting more silkies, I mean who wouldnt right? LOL but my son wants to hatch some out. We wouldn't be making a habit of it, NOT planning to. but who knows. maybe he'll want to learn about entrapreneurship and learning how to run a business. you never know!

yes it did read that here and I hav actually cancelled my orders for layer and changed it to grower and have put out oyster shell for them but they don't seem to like or eat that at the moment...that conversation on here was a good one about what people feed their silkies...interesting and informative
the blender is a pain in the butt and messy but of course we will do anything for my girls...I think i prefer to give them organic grower so momma and chicks can eat the same thing...i always move the chicks over to grower anyway after a month or so...
awesome pic and beautiful chick...thanks for sharing
ok thanks...I was worried last night as a baby just hatched and was sitting just to the front of the momma peeping so I ran around and put on a heat lamp for them...but when i went and checked on them she had it all under control...they are in the walk-out basement so it really is not that cold in there but I wanted it to be comfortable and have the chicks running around so i can see them ...lol
they are still hatching and it is hard to get a pic at the moment... but dont worry i am the king of taking pics of my chickens...lol
So pretty! Cant wait to see the others, and pictures as they grow. Pam

take it or leave it> friends dont mix with business and vice versa :/ thats my experience

a lesser quality silkie can bring the quality down a lot of the nicer ones in their offspring>would take many generations to improve

New Silkie Mama...HELP! My first Silkie egg just hatched and I don't know whether I should pull it and put it under a heat lamp or leave it with the moms (my two white Silkies were sharing the nest). This is the first clutch for both of them. If I leave it with the moms are there any special instructions I should have? I put baby chick food & water near the nest but is there anything else I should do? Does the chick have a higher chance of survival with its mom? Someone told me that Silkies just keep sitting and will sit the chicks to death. Is that true? I'm supposed to leave town today and am at a loss. Thanks
I've been lucky to have good momma hens. So far, I've always let my hens hatch the eggs. Next time I'll use the incubator though. That'll be a time when I'll be ordering quality eggs to have nicer birds.
Anyway, my hens always took very good care of their chicks except for one young hen who killed a chick. I don't think she knew what she was supposed to do when her eggs started hatching. I just removed her from the eggs and let the rest of the hens care for the chicks.
I love watching the moms with their chicks.

BTW - just wanted to post a pic of my new little cutie pie =-) The mom is a white silkie hen and the dad is one of the two sweeties in my profile pic
Cute!

If you want to keep your chicks better quality than your friends chickens, just don't keep them together when you plan on hatching eggs. That way you'll know who did what.

For next year, depending on what my Catdance chicks grow up to be, I'd like to take some of them and put them in a seperate pen to breed. Right now I have all the silkies, PQ birds included, roaming around in the same pen. But the day I decide to hatch some eggs out of my Catdance silkies, I'll be separating the ones I want to breed. Problem solved.

Are they hens or roosters ? If they are hens it is easy... just separate them when you are ready to hatch eggs... dont hatch from the lesser quality ones. If one is a rooster you would just have to keep him away from your girls for about 30 days before you are ready to start hatching.
