Silkie thread!

We are soon going to find out if the pallet coop I built my LF chickens will hold up to 70 mph winds! The silkies are in the previous coop. Ya know, I think I need to resecure the roof. While typing this, I just remembered that some screws came loose on the metal roof. that would be BAD if the roof blew off! yikes! OK, I shall go do that this mornin.g whew!

Free silkies? Score!
I tried to buy these same silkies about a month ago but I only wanted the black girls. The lady didn't want to seperate them so I didn't get them. She called me Thursday and said she would male me a deal if I would take them all. I had to promise to keep all the girls she paid a lot for and I could sell the rest if they were going to great homes. My husband had a fit at first and then said I was stupid if I got rid of them since they are already laying. So, needless to say, they aren't going anywhere. Happy dance.:D

Why did she just give them away? No one gives them away here. Even poor quality silkies go really quickly for $10+

Yeah I am keeping an eye on my girls too lol. No strong winds yet so he will see. If it gets real bad I will bring them inside.

She is in her 80s and was having a hard time getting outside to take care of them by herself. I am also buying her coops for dirty cheap to. You don't find free silkies around here either, I just got lucky, She was trying to sell them for 10 and 15 each but wanted you to buy all 10 of them. No one wanted all 10. When she couldn't sell them she called me. I didn't need 10 more silkies but I will take them for free and raise me some more babies. I guess I just got really lucky for once.

That's awesome. I was once given silkies and re-sold them. They just weren't great quality birds, but I did get a very cute black polish out of it. She gave me 4 silkies, 6 Polish and maybe 5 or 6 mixed breeds. 2 of which I have and are driving me crazy (little roosters that no one would take from me).

That polish was worth the drive to get them. The village she lived in had asked her to remove them.

Hey everyone....Prince Charming is going to be a dad! Nawwww

What a beauty! Congrats!

Does this look like a Silkie egg? I found my first egg today and I think it was from my silkie because she has been squatting a lot, making tons of noise, and acting very weird lately. It is a silkie color and size, the only other birds who could have laid it are the EE bantams...maybe. But they don't squat much. Here's the egg:

And here's who may have laid it:

Sweet! It looks a little pink to me for a silkie egg, but I'm no expert. All my silkie eggs and all the silkie eggs I've hatched are a creamy white color. Others will surely chime in however!

It could be your bantam EE's. They can lay a pink egg. The LF pullets when the first start laying lay smaller eggs than they will over time also.

Exciting though!
Congratulations!

shadow rabbit10~ it sounds like it was she that laid the egg. There is a way to tell who is laying. Pick up your silkie and hold her in your arms. Take your right hand (or dominant hand) and with 2-3 fingers feel under her vent with the fingers facing towards the front of her body.(so yo would be feeling under her body directly under the vent) There are pelvic bones that you can feel. A hen that is not laying eggs has the bones very close together (maybe 1-2 fingers). A hen that is laying will have a definite spread in these bones and you should be able to get at least 3 fingers between them If you donot get it at first just feel all of the hens /pullets and after and then you will be able to compare and find out who is laying. :D
