Silkie thread!

That is awesome...she is a little helper...she'll be a master breeder one day!
A little story this morning...I went to the walk-out basement where I have two momma hens and their chicks in separate cages up on the bench and a very large wire dog cage on the floor with a roo and three hens trying some breeding...well one of the 3 week old chicks got out of its cage during the night some time (it was 29F last night outside), must have fallen onto the cold concrete floor and I found it sitting in the large food bowl in the roo's cage eating quite happily with the roo and two of the hens...
I watched for a little while and when I went to get him out (his momma was quite frantic up on the bench watching everything) he ran under the roo who promptly sat down like a mother hen would...too funny! And it warmed my heart...lots to be thankful for there...silkies are wonderful birds....
Such a cute story!
What is the lowest temperature a Silkie can stand? I have a 3 month old and she's my first Silkie, the winters in VA can be brutal, so I'm wondering how cold she can stand, so if it goes below that, I can put her in my barn under a heat lamp. Also, what's the highest, for summer time.
Mine have no trouble at 15 degrees here in the mountains. I keep them dry though. I use a fan when they pant and dampen the ground. If the humidity is high and temps get around 100, that can be a problem.
Oh my gosh sooooooo cute!!!!!!!!
X2!!!

Well this might put it into perspective. Here's my daughter helping me at the last poultry show in october. She had just turned 19 months old (yes not even 2 years old...), 34" tall, and just about 25 pounds.

Here she's helping gather eggs in the pens...

Good thing the brahmas are docile since they have her outsized...

Oh, my! That is TOO CUTE!!!

I have a question for the experts out there. I hatched six chicks 16 weeks ago and everyone is getting big. I figured I'd get a 50/50 hatch on gender, or at least close. I ended up with 4 roo's and 2 pullets. I have rehomed one LF roo and have a lady on the hook to take the other but no one is asking about my two little Silkie boys. I have posted on Craigslist so far but that's it. I need to find them new homes sooner rather than later as I live in a suburb with a 'no rooster' law. Now, I called Code Enforcement who scratched their heads about WHEN, legaly, my cockerels become roosters but they didn't know and refered me to the humane society who just seemed more confused. Neither has crowed yet. There's a chance I can pull the 'I didn't know that was a boy!' card for a good while considering the code enforcers have no idea about chicken sexing but at least one needs to go ASAP. I tried the feedstores with the big boys (I could tell they were roo's FAST) and three months later I get a random call from a guy asking if I am still selling chickens. My add was for two free cockerels to good homes, nothing about selling hens, so I am nixing feed store adds for now. Any advise for better ways to advertise their availability?

Wasnt the breed originally from China? I think it was Marco Polo who first wrote about them finding them throughout southeast Asia
Yeah but they were standard sized I believe. Unless they were bantam sized and europe made them standard sized.... way too confusing...

After all the trials and tribulations we've had this year trying to start up a breeding program...we just got our first egg. It's adorable! I'm so happy, I can't stand it! lol

It's very difficult to rehome roos. Give the CL listing plenty of time. I have had the same problem using the term cockerel. :) I now use young rooster...

You could always say they are hens that are crowing

That's my plan! Some hens do that! what do your silies look like? You may be able to sell them on here if they are good quality.

My Jerseys get along well with the silkies, that is why it was wierd with the feather pulling but kind of wondering know if he just wanted to mate her.  I need to get this guy a few more hens, he only has one girl at this point but raising up his new harem.  My friend Karen may have some more Jersey chicks if you are interested and my Hubby is working in Albany once a week if you need another chicken transport.  The chicks I am raising there are 3 cockrels and 3 pullets so if you are interested Karen may sell one to you.  One is going to be a gorgeous blue color.  Here is a picture of my blue boy,  I call him Teddy after Teddy Pendergrass, lol.

What a beautiful blue boy! I think I'll stick with smaller chickens thank you tho.
