Silkie thread!

Im having a hard time renaming Apricot even after finding out he was a rooster. The name might have to stick.
Why will you rename him? In several countries (Spain, France, portugal, ...) Apricot is a masculine noun, so I will definitely keep it. I love that name

I wanted to share some recent pictures of my little Mia.
This year was my first year hatching silkie chicks, and I only hatched a few for fun.
Mia is the only one I kept from the Spring and Summer hatches.

She was a cute chick!

For a few months there, she was looking so weird!
She looked self blue for the first few months, then she started developing a few splash spots.
Took her away to feather out good too.

Then all of a sudden, here 7 months old, she's look so pretty!

So happy to have a silkie from my own breeding in my little collection/flock!

Hey is 6 bantam eggs too many for my silkie to hatch all at once? Shes kind of small, she actually looks bigger I think in this picture than she actually is.

She goes broody like clockwork every two and a half weeks and I got the hatching itch BAD.
Up to 10 eggs. I prefer 8 or less.

Just gorgeous!! She is self-blue right?
So do you think the chicks will be ok being hatched and raised in the coop with the silkie? Its much easier to have them hatched in the coop, the other chickens seem to accept them more readily, in fact Ive never had a problem that way. Its a lot harder to introduce them later. Its winter here but my coop can be heated, I have a flat panel heater. Or should I bring everyone inside??? Decisions decisions. Your guys input is great.
This has worked for me but can be risky especially if you have other young ones. Moms can be vicious!

Guys, my silkie passed in the night :( I dont' know what is going on. I have a sick LF too. you might remember some of the story about it, here is what I posted in emergencys/diseases forum bc I dont' feel like typing it out again. I just don't know what was actually wrong wtih my silkie. I'm thinking it wasn't cocci, but what?? he lost weight but didn't have any other symptoms and his crop was empty last time I lifted him.

I have 2 coops, one with silkies, one with large fowl.

I took my friends chickens a few weeks back, I know the chickens well and I've observed them over the months and they were healthy so I didn't quarantine them. One of the silkies started with cocci after about a week. I've battled with it myself with the silkies since getting them. The same one kept getting it. Well, I figured the new silkies had to get used to different strains of the cocci because it was a different soil they were on. I treated them and separated them and they are fine. Meanwhile, one of my current silkies started acting funny. She/he was just puffing up and acting lethargic. So I thougth maybe he/she had cocci also and I started just treating them all. He/she felt really light and didn't seem to have a full crop ever. I don't know what the deal was. I thought everything was fine since they were all acting ok until I just went out to get their water to change it and he is dead. :(

Meanwhile, in my LF coop last week one of my dominiques jumped down from the eaves and broke her leg. She's been hopping around. Everyone else is doing great. Until this morning, I just went out there and my other dominique is laying on the floor twitching like. barely moving at all. I have no idea what is going on. I've never had any issues in the 3 1/2 years that I've owned chickens. I didn't think anything was wrong with her, but now that I think back, her comb wasn't bright red, but I just choked that up to her not laying eggs right now or something. I guess she wasn't feeling good.

Is there anything I should/can do? I honestly have no idea what is going on. And I haven't noticed any general symptoms either. She was acting fine, I didn't see her puffing up or anything.

I really just want to cry right now. Melon was my favorite chicken. SHe was SO sweet. She was hatched in March I think.

ETA: the dominique, Melon, when I locked them up last night she was roosting with the others in the eaves. I need to figure out a way to block that off, but haven't had the chance yet.

Hi! sheeshshe sorry I'm no help in what is wrong with your chickens but I would try to cover the eve as it sounds to high or make a ladder up to it for them. Several boxes to stager the climb.

Wish I had advice but just no experience with illnesses.

So sorry :( The best way to know what your dealing with is to get a necropsy done. Some states do it free of charge or very little cost. You can do a search on it and see what is best for your area. It may be to late for the one that's passed but you should keep it in mind if another one gets ill. I hope they don't. Best of luck.

I just don't know what to do! My dominique is now gone, my silkie, gone. What is next? WHAT IS IT? Is it contagious? Is it just some fluke incidents? IDK! I have looked at symptom lists for chickens and I feel like I'm getting nowhere. I don't know how to treat. I don't know what it is. AM I going to lose EVERYONE??

Is their food bad? IDK! I go into th LF coop and they're all attcking me like they're hungry, but they have food. it is not old food, I got it 2 weeks ago and it has stayed dry.

I can't seem to find anything about necropsy online in the search I just did. Just in northern maine? how do I search for that?
