Silkie thread!

Yeah breeder birds VS Hatchery birds are a big difference. Breeders breed for Quality and hatcheries breed for Demand and supply.
I have gotten silkies from Ideal before some had small crest and to no crest at all. I gave up on the hatchery birds and met with a breeder close to me who is also a BYC'er and I only buy my silkies & hatching eggs from breeders.

Are you looking for pets or are you looking to show or to breed and sell eggs is the real question. If pets hatchery birds are fine to show or to breed to sell eggs find a good breeder.

Honestly, hatchery birds will be ok for me. I would love to breed for quality, but am under city restrictions. No roo's allowed

I think it's just ingrained in me to have good quality animals. I grew up with parents who breed Vizsla dogs and Arabian horses. Was taught at a young age how to look at the confirmation of the animals not just cuteness

I did order some self blue from Ideal due to ship to me in may I'v heard their quality is not the best but I like a Challenge..LOL

Colie <3 :

Sonoran how many silkies do you have right now? I'm always curious how many people keep that are really into silkies. What do you with your culls? Being nosey

edit to extend these questions to everybody, feeling super nosey right now

I currently have 4 silkies but I'm set up for 25 adults trying to be patient on expanding to max capacity but it's hard!!

I make a point of not counting. Neighbors always get birds for free (unless they want a SQ one, which no one has so far); I also sell culls to a local pet store, or if they worm themselves into my heart, they get yard duty--eating scorpions and other nasties.

I would love to see what they look like. I had some a few years back from Ideal, they were pitiful, not self blue. I had buff and partridge. I think I kept 1 partridge out of 10. Then ended up selling her once I bought my first incubator and discovered having eggs shippped.

I got blue bantam silkies from Cackle this year and 2 out of 11 died. The rest are growing up nicely (4 weeks? 5?) but they sure are a variety of colors.

Personally I won't be using Cackle again. Too many problems with them (not just us).

well, Cackle just called and my chicks will be shipped on april 25th!

Rilly, I sold the lavenders. Decided it wasn't what I wanted to do. Instead now I've got paints in here. But that works, I like my white birds a ton and with these guys and their black patches it makes it that much more fun.

I do have a blue roo I'm thinking about selling. He came from Amy Piehl, he's blue but I can't do anything with him since whites and paints are my thing.

Ohhhh I'm so excited I've got birds on the way! I'm getting a lavender roo from shagbark silkies and I'm also getting a black trio, porcelain pullet and blue/splash quad from John Fitzgerald! My husband ok'ed it but I have a feeling he's gonna flip when he sees all of them when they show up lol!
