Silkie thread!

I took some quick snap shots of the guys this morning before running in to teach kids how to ride.

Picture quality is not good and colors are way off in most shots.. I'll get better pictures when I have more time.

Ace all of a sudden looks like a rooster! It's amazing how quickly it happened. I swear, it happened over night. One day I went out to see my chickens and he looked like this. They're 6 months old now.

Even my white pullet is starting to look really nice. I wasn't sure if she was going to turn out like anything but I'm glad she did. Only thing I'm upset about is that she has no feathers on her middle toe.

I'll never breed her and I can't show her so I probably won't keep her. Such a bummer. I don't have the space for a white rooster.

We have some chest here too. Finally! lol Look out Macho!

Dopey cockerels having a disagreement.

Here's Iris, looking pretty good outside with her new friends. Colors terribly off, doesn't do her any justice, but this was the only good shot I got so far. She posed for a split second and the rest was all "butt in my face".

Ok, so IF this lone egg hatches, I need to get chick food. Will the mom guard it from the other chickens, or will the big chickens eat up the chick food?

She will probably guard the chick but not the food.
looks beautiful! To be absolutely sure though you will need a side shot and a spread out wing shot. Also count the toes and make sure they all have a nail.

I am really wanting to do this with one of my silkies. I used to be a activities director for our local skilled nursing facility and alzheimers day program and saw how wonderfully people responded to the pets that came in. Do I need to start with a youngster ? At what age did you start taking them for visits ?

By the way.. you didnt look terrible :) I am so excited to read this post! I had mentioned wanting to do this with one of my silkies to a few people that seemed to think i was nuts ! Any special tips ??? I was a bit concerned about someone hurting them accidentally...

Well Icelynn is 6 months right now and I have been working with her since she was 3 months old, but she did come to me very friendly so it was a good start. You will want to chose a silkie that is VERY calm and tolerant of all sorts of handling because they will be passed person to person. Any chance I get I let people hold her, even young children. You would be watching everything that goes on with your chicken and be right next to it at all times so you shouldn't worry about it getting hurt. You will definitely need a diaper though. Good luck =D It is very rewarding.
