Silkie thread!

Does anyone know of anyone in northern indiana that has nice quality bearded silkies? I know of a few places south of Indy, but I don't want to drive that far, I don't hatch my own eggs, and I need pullets. So grown would be best. I want to breed My pullet and roo, and would like another color, since they are both blue. The lady I got mine from is out of the chicken biz now.

Sorry everyone! Like a new mother I have to post a gazillion pictures of my new baby silkies.

First family outing

Here is my splash and blue

My blues. Not sure if you can see it but there is a little brown on the neck of the blue chick in the front. Will it stay brown or will it eventually turn blue?

The hens were starting to give me the stink eyes......

Here is another picture of my blue with a bit of brown on it's neck. Hens are starting to get upset and blocking my view.

Had to stop taking picture or risk life and limb trying to get it.

Never knew they can be so protective!!!

I have two that came out of Catdance eggs marked 'BlS'. I assume it stands for Blue Split. The biggest chick might be male and has dark blue under fluff. The smallest is a female and has beautiful blue under fluff with black tips. They are under three months old.

Yesterday out in the garden. They do not appear to be splash but dark blue.
Beautiful chicks!
I'm devastated. Something just took my favorite Silkie, Bubbles. - probably a raccoon or cat. He was there when I checked on the flock late this afternoon. When I went to put them up for the night he was gone. My DH found a clump of his feathers where whatever it was pulled him under the house. I'm so upset!!!

I know this is part of owning chickens but it's my first predator incident and I don't like it one bit!

Here are a couple of picture I took last week. He was almost 6 months old; a Bobbie Porto baby.
He would follow me around in the back yard especially when I was working in the gardens. Knew I was likely to dig up some treats for him.

Really heartbreaking. So very sorry...

The pic definitely makes him look darker than he really is. He is actually a light silver color with hints of a light kahki showing down his back. These were iPhone pics in my poorly lit basement
Your description sounds more porcelain. Hope you get what you want!!
Thanks for getting back to me so fast!!! I just looked you up and your birds are beautiful but you are 3 hours away... ;( Anyone in the Inland Empire or OC area?
There's a breeder in Norco. I don't know them personally so can't really recommend but you could check with them. http://amberwavessilkies.blogspot.com/ Also, I have seen lots of silkies on Craigslist down your way.

Thank you so much for your warm thoughts. My DH went under the house this morning to remove the carcass but it was only feathers. He found the tracks of Boonie, our next door neighbor's raccoon, where she had dragged the bird over to their house. Boonie was brought to them as a baby so they hand-raised it. It's an indoor/outdoor coon and they feed it very well. That's why I didn't think she would go to the trouble of catching a chicken when she never wants for food. Obviously I was wrong. Lesson learned. I'll take extra measures to keep the flock safe.

Very cute chicks. I don't know if the brown will be a problem.

Anyone have any suggestions on treating vent gleet? I think Christine's girls may have it. I have been giving them apple cider vinegar in their water, but ti doesn't help that it's been so hot and they have been drinking a lot and eating watermelon. I have heard of using an anti-fungal cream from the drugstore? I also am deworming them in case that is the problem. Actually, is it bad to deworm with wazine if the woman I got them from just gave them oral ivomec? I am going to get them some probiotics too. Any suggestions?

I had success with taking oil of oregano and mixing it with olive oil until it doesn't burn on the tongue. then I used 1 ML 3 times per day. I did this for a week. And then I added in primal defense probiotic. and continued with ACV in the water long term.

I picked these two sweet chicks up at a swap over the weekend. The little Asian lady told me the dark one was a Silkie and the other was an "Angel Bird" - which I think she may have mistaken for a cockatoo. They are 3 and for months old, respectively and have feathered feet. I'm thinking the white "angel bird" could be a Sultan or Sultan-Silkie cross - just not sure at all. I was there to get my Buff Orpingtons and this other lady was desperate to sell them, so - me being the sucker and them being beautiful - they are now mine. Does anybody know what the white one might be? I'm pretty sure the dark one is a silkie, due to the fuzzy hat.
Thanks!

Yup the dark one is a partridge silkie and the white does look like a sultan to me.

Does anyone have any Silkie/Cochin crosses? I have two babies I got yesterday and I was told they are 'Silkens' which is supposedly a Silkie and Cochin Bantam cross? Trying to find out more information but I'm not having much luck. Here is a picture of them. They are about 4 weeks old (so I was told).

There is a thread for those I believe.
