so, the two chicks I had in my house, one is 2 1/2 weeks and the other is 1 1/2 weeks, I just tucked under my pullet who's sitting on eggs. they're day 23 or 24 and no hatching. and we're leaving for a trip this sunday, so I need the hens to take care of them! well, she is allowing them to lay under her, which is super cute to watch, the chicks love it so much. the rooster is scared of them!!! it is hilarious! so so so funny. I'm hoping this works out, because if it doesn,t I'm going to have to find someone to watch these silly chicks. gah!

I am looking for advice on transitioning my chickens together in the coop.
I have 6 sex link pullets that are 11weeks old and 8 silkie chicks that are around 7 weeks old. Around a week ago my husband sectioned off part of the coop and we moved the silkies from their brooder into the coop. One of the silkie chicks jumps out almost every time I open the coop to feed or water them and the older sex links immediately run over and start pecking at him. Is there anything I should be doing to get them used to each other? What is they best way to transition them all together? Do I need to wait until my silkies are a certain age before I can mix them in with the sex links?

Thanks. I was debating if the lighter one was buff or not, but I think the darker brown is partridge. It has markings on the feathers coming in on its wings. The 4 blacks are all pretty black in person, so I was pretty sure on them and the whites. I'm not breeding for show or color, so they will probably produce some funny colors next year depending on which are roosters and who gets to stay. Any helpful sites on chicken color genetics?
Oh, you'll get all sorts of colors. I did that with my pet silkies when I got my first chickens. I had 4 and all were different colors. It was fun and of course they're great pets.

I've had good luck with my hens taking care of chicks that they did not hatch. I don't know if I just have extra good broodies or whatever but never had a problem with my girls.

I'm pretty sure your hen wouldn't let the chicks sit under her if she didn't want them.

I think you're right. I mean, she's letting them under her wing and they love it. the other hen? she does NOT want them near her! she's all nipping at them and growling at them. ugh. she really wants those eggs to hatch. I'm just afraid that there 's no hope at this point.

I think you're good then, with the hen and the chicks.

She wouldn't be nice if she didn't want the babies.
For the eggs. I would imagine that the hens will eventually stop sitting on them if nothing hatches. Mother nature will have to kick in at some point and tell the hens that "You're done now. Nothing is hatching". lol

I just have to show off my new baby. I bought a beautiful buff pair a few months ago. I was thrilled when she started laying. So, I threw a test egg in the incubator and out popped this sweetie!

the thing is, we're leaving on sunday mornign very early... so, if they're still on them by then, I will have to take them away. I'm sure they're going to smell by then!
