Silkie thread!

[Sonoran Silkies]

I am looking for information about straight combs in Silkies. I have a gray that turned out to be a rooster but now I can't even use him because he has a straight comb. Do I sell him as a Silkie cross or as a pure Silkie with a defect? He is also getting red coloring to his white feathers. I bought him with another gray Silkie, also a rooster, but the other gray has a walnut comb and no red coloring so I should be able to use him (not sure what color he will produce with my BBS hens). He is a pet quality silkie. Single combs are not uncommon in hatchery birds or sometimes from breeding projects. With red coming in on his white feathering, I would guess he is likely from a paint project...

U have some beautiful Silkies. I am trying to raise silkies and am very new at it. I bought some from local ,reputable breeder. Some were a wk. old and some were 2 days old 14 in all. I have had them since Oct. 25th and have lost 4. 3blk and one wht. The temp is consistent of 88 to 91. I have lost 1 a night for the last 4 nights.paper towels for cage liner.Pen is inside closed in, insulated garage. electrolytes .medicated food. any advice would be appreciated. I hate that I have lost my little silkies and have no idea why.I have some Guinea's,raised them up fine...Have some Buff Orphanages ,raised them from 1 day old,lost [email protected].

Check under their wings for lice/mites. Also, how are they acting? And how do the droppings look? I assume you mean Aug 25, not Oct.

no sign of lice r mites and sorry I do mean Aug 25.Their poop looks fine according to poop chart. I did notice that the last one I lost was drinking a lot of water yesterday. The first one I lost I kept in the house for a few days made sure he was eating and drinking well , put him back in with the others that morn. doing fine running around ,eating,drinking , the next morn he was dead. That was my first one that I lost. They do not act sick. Their eyes r bright and they r running around. The one that died this morn was fine at 10;30 when I checked them last. At 4:30 he was laying on his side by heat lamp and he was hardly breathing he died a few minutes after I took him from box. Breeder said that she has not lost any. My husband said that she had removed a black one because it was not doing well. I just want to know what is going on so I do not loose anymore. Thank U for your time .

Could be cocci, you won't necessarily see a dramatic change in the poop. Amprolium also has a shelf life. Check the bag for best before date.

My buffs r young and eating the same food would it effect them also. will check date on bag. r there any symptoms.

In chicks, you might only see them acting a little listless and then they die. It can kill very quick.
I would start them on corrid. Yes you would need to treat all of them.

where do I get it? from my vet, I am assuming it is an antibiotic .

No it's not an antibiotic, it's a vitamin B inhibitor. You can buy it at a feed store if you are in the US. I had to buy mine online, but I'm in Aus. There are many threads on this site about coccocidiosis , and it seems to be fairly prevalent at the moment.
