Silkie thread!

Just a quick update on the wee man.

Yeap he is a wee man he finally crowed this morning! Darn!

My SIL came over with her hubby and I brought the wee man in the house for them to see him. He is adorable! He lay on his back in my arms when I brought him in like a baby and cuddled up.
Then my SIL wanted to hold him and I thought Ohhh NO! This is not going to go down well. I had visions of him flapping about the house while 4 idiot adults tried in vain to catch him!
But NO to my utter surprise he sat on her lap for about 10 mins and was fussed and stroked and kissed! Then she took him over to her hubby who sat him on his lap and stroked and cuddled him!
He just sat there like a loved up little prince charming! They are taking him and are getting him some wives! Which is great news as we can't keep him here. They will use him to breed. He is a darling.

Ohhh got to have a really good look at the feet - 5 toes and two under developed spurs so all good!!!!! :) He leaves tomorrow for the new home. They have 8 PRs and a big PR rooster boy but the wee man will have a home and run of his own so he wont be in with the BIG people. Once he gets his wives he will be soooooo Happy!!!!!!

Oes

Ok, so maybe I'll let him outside in the grass to run around for a while and then put him in the run?

He's never went after the chicks like that before!  it scared me so badly!  it was my favorite chick too.  I'm so glad it made it.

Aoxa, I was thinking about you the other day and missed your posts.  and voila!  there you are! :)

Oh, I'm glad he'll calm down after his teenager years, that is reassuring!  I'll keep him in hopes he gets better.  I'll see if I can give him a girlfriend. There is one girl who used to be in the silkie pen that my hen hatched out, so she's always hanging out by the fence.  so they get along pretty well.  Maybe she could be his new girlfiend :)

I would be scared to add a new hen in the pen with the chick running around. I would move him. Maybe putting him in a pen inside the big girls coop and let them get use to him before introducing. He might love all those big lady's!

Take your most submissive hens you have and give him two in the silkie pen.

You could try and add him in there. Do it in the morning when he is at his most horny. See if they accept him.

I usually have more problems with roosters attacking the silkie boys.. I think it's safe to try it if you are around to watch for the first while.
thank you. I'll give it a try first thing in the morning. hopefully they accept him.

Try it both ways.

I have my hens with chicks in with all of my birds no problem. God forbid one tries to go after a chick... that broody will whoop their butt :p Although silkies are different.. they don't always seem to protect like the large fowl.

I've seriously never had another chicken kill a chick..*knock on wood*

I sure hope he calms down for you after getting some lady lovin'

Watch out for this evil broody. ;) She's a silkie x BR. She's the one that took on the hawk and won.

she took on a hawk and won!??!? holey cow! wow!! that's great!

See, Mr T is fine. He's out there with the chicks and mama hen. they're both showing them how to peck around etc. he does great during the day. it is just first thing in the morning and that's it! and they all know not to enter the run until he's calmed down. except today! ugh

Yep, had a male cooper's hawk by the tail. It was trying to take one of her chicks. Not on her watch. She is a vicious mama. Really came in handy. All 12 are still alive, and the hawk has migrated.

I'm glad to hear he's only like that briefly.

I called 3 avian vets, and was told to use DE, so that's what I did. just on the backs near vent and a bit under wings. I am so paranoid of respiratory issues. I am watching them closely, but if there is a problem, Im not sure i can actually do anything for them. I let my cochin dust bathe in sand and put some on her back so I wouldn't aspirate the chicks, and cleaned out the brooder. Vet said to re treat in a week. They said DE is the only thing they would use on day old chicks. I still may go get poultry dust for my large coop. It isn't an infestation yet, so hopefully the DE does the trick. I haven't seen any of my large birds scratch at all. I think Lavender got it while she was broody and gave it to the chicks, then when I put the chicks together in the brooder they gave it to each other. I am treating everybody anyway.

I take advantage of their bloodiness and dust them in the weeks leading up to hatch date.
I use pestine on the hen and dust the nest with orchardists sulphur. Seems to work.
You are very lucky to have 3 avian vets in your area!

She's a frazzled cochin =) I do notice her skin is pretty dry, I gave her an oatmeal bath. She is butt naked so she lives inside with a diaper. I'm hoping her feathers grow back in well but they keep falling out even when she is just walking =P Our winters here are really bad so I don't dare to put her outside, also because the others pick on her too badly. I don't mind having her as a companion though ;) she LOVES to snuggle.

Neither of mine like to snuggle--I wish they did.

I just can't stand the feather quality--it feels so awful to touch. If you so much as look at them, their feathers fall out or break.

Will you breed your frazzle Cochin? How will you protect her from getting hurt? I would think a saddle will also damage the frazzle--maybe not yours, but I think it would damage my frazzle. I have the frazzle cockerel and a Silkie cockerel (that I have not had the heart to slaughter....yet) that I would like to mix in with the flock of Silkies, Polish and the frazzle, but I am worried that the frazzle pullet will be badly hurt if the cockerels try to breed her.

Of the four hatchery bantam Cochin frizzles I bought, I expected half would be normal feathered and half frizzled. Instead I got three frazzles and only one frizzle (that my #($& mini Dachshund killed). The frizzle was a fabulous little cockerel, very docile. You could play with him like a little doll.

Mine have some sort of skin thing going on and have since they were little chicks. It almost looks like folliculitis. I've read reference to skin problems with frazzles, but can't find anything other than hearsay. Below are pictures of the skin issues on the foot and under the tail. The third picture is the underside of the tail. He's lying wrapped up on his belly with the tail pulled up--the tip of the tail is at the top left, the vent, which you can't see, is at the bottom right. The skin is inflamed in a narrow stripe down the outside of the leg. I didn't notice it on the feet at first, because it was hidden in the feathers. I had thought it might have been a sensitivity to the pine shavings and have recently put them on hay. I've bathed them a few times in a flea shampoo and that seemed to improve things, but they don't show any signs of parasites, just inflamed skin where it is bare--the tip of their tail/oil gland, their butt, their keel bone. I almost think it is a skin infection, deep in the tissues. I've also dusted them in DE.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? It is only the Cochins that have this skin thing. The other birds (Silkies, Polish and bantam Plymouth Rock) raised with them since day-olds from the hatchery have never had anything.

The last picture is my little frazzle Cochin pullet. I would appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks.
