Silkie thread!

Wished we lived where people raise Silkies. In New York State there are very very few breeders. It is difficult to purchase Silkies.
I had to have my first birds shipped. Eggs too. When I first got silkies it was eggs I bought. Then as I got to know more about them I started buying them as chicks. There are people around here that have silkies but I never knew of it till after I got into mine about a year or so. Shipping is high for live birds but so worth it to get the good quality ones. I now sell eggs mostly, and thats to be able to maintain my flock with what they need. If they didn't pull their own weight I couldn't afford to keep them. when I do make a profit it goes into buying some chicks or a bird.

I've got a sick hen now because of this cold weather. She is inside getting antibiotics. She seems to be doing better. She is able to cough up the junk in her lungs now and don't stand with her head tucked back to her shoulders anymore. She is watching TV right now. lol Guess she's entertained. It's not the first time she has been inside. She is a sizzle I bought as an egg. She has the double frizzle gene so she tends to get naked from time to time so to make her more comfortable I bring her in and pamper her till she grows her feathers back. She spent all winter last year inside.

Do any of you use a Brinsea Echo Brooder. I have just got mine. I read the directions and tips. I have eggs due to hatch Thursday, but had to hatch today. Since there is only two of them at the time I only put one side (leg) of the brooder on it so they could get up against it if they choose. I moved the two hatched chicks they are dry and was peeping constantly. Now they are up under the low end of the brooder and curled up quiet together. One chick had some yolk hanging out. I was told to clip it after it dries. and one has curled toes. I'm not surprised about the toes those D'anver eggs are pretty small. I will take care of the toes and yolk tomorrow. Now to lock down the others... I have one Silkie egg in there.
Any advice anyone has would be greatly depreciated.

I keep reading about peoples Silkies getting sick over the winter or even dying. Are Silkies more susceptible to disease or does the cold really affect them in a way that makes them look sick, because chickens don't get colds. So all this talk about Silkies not feeling well gets me a little nervous. I have not over wintered Silkies yet (they are just chicks right now)so Im not sure what to expect. I have a coop for them already that is being housed by ducks at the moment. This Spring I plan to modify the coop to better suit the Silkies and keep them warmer.

Is it possible for some of you to post pics of the coops you house your Silkies in especially if you live in an area with harsh weather. Also curious does anyone add anything to their Silkie runs to keep their feet less wet and less muddy in bad weather, like playground sand or small pebbles?
