Silkie thread!

So one more round of pics. I went into the pitch black den and snapped some pics. It was pretty funny when I looked at the results. The sleep habits of a momma and 5 chicks. At 3 weeks old they are getting a little big for sleeping under her. And what I am calling The Croods.. If you have seen it, you know what a family sleep pile is.
What a pretty little guy!! Can't wait to see what color it will be!! :)

Hey guys I'm gettin excited.... Feb. 27th chickies will hatch. I started with 9 eggs but 4 weren't fertile(from a newer own young silkies) there doing good. I'm hoping I get cool colored ones. Since I won't know what I'll get.

after my Isaac was killed in paranoid and the chickens are inside... They don't seem to mi d. I do let them outside when I'm home tho.

Who cares what it smells like LOL! Save those babies whatever it takes - it's only for a little while & before you know it they're all grown UP !

Kabhyper 1 how do you keep your wood floor so nice with all the silkies running around. BTW they are beautiful.

I agree w drumstick diva that kabhyper1's wood floors are beautiful showing off those cute Silkies.

Last year we invested in a 4x4x3' tall portable dog kennel w/ swingout access door to quarantine some juveniles & adults before introducing them to the flock outside. We got a thick plastic roll, cut it a little wider than the kennel dimensions, used blue painting tape (silver or black duct tape doesn't work) to secure the plastic taped-down to a big area rug, & then layed out newspaper every day over the plastic. Easy to clean once a day - just roll up the newspapers w/ the poop w/ the scattered feed. I didn't want to deal w/ shavings on the floor as the chickens will scratch & toss it all over the room - but we did add a lidded Homz Kidz plastic box w/ straw for them to nest in if they wanted & they used it every night to sleep in or lay their eggs. This was a daily, sometimes twice daily task, but we do the same w/ their outdoor coop also so no biggie.

They weren't that clean, I retouched the poo spots in the pics because it was gross.

Mine freak out on my timber floors, and I worry about them slipping a hock, which is why it's not recommended to use news paper in the brooder. My polished boards are way too slippery.

Yep, every situation is different. W/ us our newspaper worked fine in the pen - used it for juvenile (not chicks) Leghorns, Ameraucana, & Silkies. I believe newspaper is not recommended for chicks but I have used paper towel for a baby chick in a large parakeet cage & it worked out fine. That chick was a free-range baby. She'd go from her little cage to "free-range" our computer desk & sleep on our warm laptops or cuddle in our hands, or walk up to our shoulder. We had to spoil her that way because we didn't have a 2nd chick as a companion - all she had in her cage was a nestbox & a mirror to cuddle with.
