Silkie thread!

I have decided my boy eggy must go today. He has been over mounting marshie like crazy and even mounted my 10 week silkie chick! Marshies back is almost bare and i know there are hen saddles but the bigger problem is that once eggy attempted mounting marshie today she tried to get away and was unwilling. Then my jap roo came up to eggy and began flogging him as if he didnt want him to mess with poor marshie anymore.

This rooster is out of hand for me....marshie is the inly other silkie in the coop of three hens and im just scared to come home one day to find one if my roosters dead.

Crowing and wearing out mounting his sister is why we re-homed our boy. We weren't zoned for roos and he never stopped warbling - the little bugger. Loved him but he had to be re-turned to the breeder. We all have to do what we think best for our particular flock. Best wishes on your arrangement - Smiles :)

Ok. Found this company in Miami. Feather testing costs about $20 bucks.

I'm going to give it a try. Not a bad price, especially when it's so difficult to sex young Silkies. Hope this helps.

$20 is good. Amber Waves Silkies charges about $25 to give you a guaranteed sex but you have to wait for the results as I wouldn't be surprised if they used the same service. With the way you can't tell what a Silkie will be even at 6 months sometimes it's worth the investment instead of waiting half a year to find out if it lays an egg or crows!

I've seen these LF meat silkie in my part of town at 2 different poultry places. As of origins, I have no clue. I've seen these types at LA's china town(So Ca) before too, when they still were allowed to keep live birds at the factory. I think the farmers would have had to special order them as chicks from some place that produce silkies for the Asian meat market.

I think in a few generations of selective cross breeding with the bantam fluffy fur balls, one can make a LF full beard silkie bird too.

A couple years back I saw a bearded LF and bantam side by side but I didn't bookmark it so don't know where I viewed it. It was at a time when I hadn't seriously considered what breed I was going to get so just glossed over it. Kick me plz!

hello all, quick question, I know you can't really tell hen/roo until they are crowing or laying... but a couple of my 3 week old chicks are way bigger than the others, their little legs are at least twice as thick, does this sometimes mean roo? they have longer feathers than everyone else right now and the huge thick legs.... just curious.

Watch to see how large the walnut comb gets. You just can't tell anything about Silkies. I was told up until 5 months that both my Partridge were pullets until at 7 months one started to crow and mount his sister. The fact that both Partridges sort of had hard tail feathers sticking out of their tail fluff was another factor hiding who was pullet or cockerel. Good luck with your chicks but in this case size isn't necessarily what matters.

TeeHee! I needed that bluenkimchi!

Thanks, she/he's a doll!! I'm not sure if the age I was told is correct, so not getting my hopes up yet. Lol This Silkie is WAY smaller than my hen. Like half the size! Idk of silkies grow different than other breeds, but by 7 months my others are really close to full grown.

I don't have a flock of Silkies to compare sizes. However, the vet weighed my littler Black Silkie at 2.2 lbs and she was 18 months. The Partridge is 3 years old and she feels a little heavier than the Black but size-wise when they stand side-by-side neither one stands any taller than the other one. They always look like they're hugging the ground when they walk because their bottom fluffy feathers touch the ground or maybe it's just the funny 5-toe feathered walk? Cute in any event.
