Silkie thread!

Some days there'll be too many eggs and some days none. Glad you have at least one definite Silkie pullet!

I was getting 4 eggs a day from 4 hens and all of a sudden today I have two broodies - a Silkie and of all things a Buff Leghorn went broody too and she was one of my best layers. Now I only have 2 layers out of 4 - grrrr!

the same hen is acting like she wants to lay another today but didnt when i put them up for the night she has been scratching inside the coop like she is building a nest but wont go in the boxes i have for them is she about to go broody

Above didn't quote the pictures with the wings. *ETA* relooked and maybe I have it backwards. I thought I had read somewhere that you can sex a silkie when it lays an egg or crock-a-doodle-doos!

We've had her/him for three weeks, today!

and just cause she/he is so cute. From day one till today.

Anyone know what color this silkie chick may be? Its wings are lighter than it's body and it had gold-ish splotches on its face, I have not seen one like it. Thanks in advance!

Hi, your pictures are cute. I had a question. Im somewhat new here and Got chicks a couple of weeks ago and I had a question. I have three silkie chicks that have all their feathers (their feet are also feathery). But what I dont understand is their comb and feathers. I posted images. You'll notice that the comb is bright red and their feathers a slicker than I thought, like a RIR. They are about 2-2 1/2 weeks old. when I looked at images online the silkies at that age looked like a cotton ball all puffy. I want to know if mine are silkies... or a different breed of chicken. Thanks please reply.

That sounds exactly like what my Lily had. She just got off her 3rd round of Tylan. The first two I only gave her 3 days of and it came right back. This time I gave it for 5 days. She is doing really well. it looked like Micoplasmosis but the vet said no, that it was from dust from being cooped up from the winter and it gave her an infection. The Tylan 50 does seem to help. If it happens again, I may refer to your situation and try the Baytril for her. I know it isn't serious because she has always been the only one who gets it and it's the same side of her face every time. HUGE swollen sinus and crusty eye. Sneezing and tired. She eats like a little piggy all through it though. She is doing really great right now. I try to keep her out of cold drafts and dusty environments. This is the first night in awhile that she is sleeping with the flock. I had been bringing her in nights. I'm glad your hen is better! I heard from a few others this winter that they had birds with the same thing.

It was a bad winter for us here. I had more sick birds than I ever have. I lost 3 to what was thought to be Mereks. Turns out it was worms. My vet is the one that wanted to try treatment for worms. He said that he had a chicken in with what looked to be Mereks and when the necropsy report came back it turned out to be worms. I lost 3 beautiful silkies because I thought it was Mereks and I culled right away to try to stop it going thru my flock. With everybody being closed up in their individual pens it was contained to my juvie pen. When the 4th one showed mild signs I took him to the vet. Sure enough it was worms. So to others that may have birds showing signs of Mereks, isolate them and treat for worms before culling.

I had several with colds, the one with the bacterial infection and one with phnemonia. I also had a hen with a prolapsed vent and I couldn't get it back in so I had to cull her. Now everybody has had their regular spring worming and I'm still working on giving everybody baths after being closed up.

I've never seen one like it but it is beautiful. It would be awsome if it feathered out that way.

I wait till they are older before I start wondering if they are boys or girls. At about 2 months old they begin to show signs of their sex. the boys will have a longer neck and generally are bigger than the girls. When the streamers appear it's definately a boy. If the crest is nice and round it's a girl. I also go by the thickness of the legs, if their crest shows more or less of the comb. I don't even try to sex them when they are babies. When I first got into Silkies It was crow or not before I knew. when I tried to guess I was always wrong so I just hatched and studied how they feathered out and what they turned out to be. I don't concider myself a pro about Silkies. There is so much to them. But I can say I know mine and how my babies grow and turn out. As we all do I would imagine.
