Silkie thread!

Ok, so after figuring out that the eggs I have been finding are definitely from my BO's and especially since I've been sometimes finding two a day, I found this. It was an egg, with a very soft and pliable shell and someone had been piercing it with their beak. It had been split down one side and I found it directly under where Abigail, our Silkie pullet sleeps and not in the nesting box where I find the eggs. It is pictured here next to one of the Buff's eggs (they're still small) and from the color I'm guessing our Silkie is starting to lay, but based on the paper thin shell, is this one that she let slip early, or did she just not take advantage of the oyster shell I leave in the run? Another question would be am I going to have an egg eater after this? I suspect Major our Buff Orp. roo as the culprit, but I have no proof.
Often the first eggs are misshaped, soft shelled or even shell less . She will just be taking advantage of the soft packaging. It usually takes a couple of weeks for things come good.

I'm just tickled she's starting to lay.
She's a sweetie and our favorite for sure.
She can take all the time she needs.

Anything I need to do? Looks like he isn't closed completely.

This is one special needs chick. Poor thing. cross over beak and his right eye is weird. Either no eyelid or no eye I can't tell.
Obviously won't be used as breeding stock.

Any ideas on color? My guesess are either white, blue or splash. He does have some black mixed in with white. I know its the feathering and not the skin because its sticking straight up away from the skin.

What ever you do don't pull at the chord, just let it drop off. Clean the area with some betadine and apply some triple antibiotic , Terramycin or vetericyn to the navel. Chickens can live with one eye but navel infection can be fatal.

Well the baby detached on itself. Poor thing has so many problems dont know if it is genetics. E-bay eggs so I can't say. His right eye never fully formed and has a cross beak. S/he will not be used for breeding. s/he is the only one that hatched. only 2 made it to lockdown. I still have 1 more egg waiting to hatch.

They're here!!! The 8 paint eggs arrived safely, settled from shipping and are now under their momma. Eta 10/23. Now if I can keep weight on my very intent broody, we will hopefully have smooth sailing. :)
