Silkie thread!

I changed the chicks bedding from sand to pine shavings, you would think it was the end of the world! lol I know they enjoy dust bathing but they kept gettign sand stuck between their toes and in their feathers. Once they get older i'll try sand again. What does everyone do for dirty feathers? The chicks are 1 week old, had their first bath today...was just meant for a foot soak...one chick got wet everywhere except her head! lol
They get the shavings stuck to their feet too.

I use sand just for the first two weeks. Just until they figure out what is food, and what is not. It doesn't hurt them to ingest the sand. Sand acts like grit. For new babies, first couple days I put paper towels on top of the sand though.

So far they haven't got anything stuck to their feet yet. I am using the deep liter method with the pine shavings. So we'll see how that goes. As long as nothing get wet. I am using a nipple watereer so I havent had any issues with water, thank goodness!

Oh also, I know both of my silkies were born with 5 toes. I always go over the chicks before putting them in the brooder and counting their toes on one of them. when I was cleaning sand off their feet yesterday I notices one had 5 toes on one foot and only 4 toes on the other??

I got a splash silkie from a friend who is like that, but so was his mother (a showgirl), so it must be inherited.
