Silkie thread!

Hello All! As part of my initiation into the world of chicken obsession, I've just acquired my first trio of Silkies and I must confess that they have me a bit perplexed. I selected this breed to join my new Australorps and Barred Rocks because of their purportedly affectionate personalities and tendency towards broodiness. My Silkies are roughly two weeks old now, and while one of them is affectionate if a bit flighty, the other two really don't seem to like socializing with me. Of my ten chicks total, these are the only two who consistently run away in protest when I get near them. Is this at all common in this breed? Do you have any suggestions as to how I may socialize them better? I don't want any of my birds to feel afraid or in any way traumatized by the mere sight of me, and coaxing with meal worm treats seems insufficient in winning these two over.

My silkies are skiddish too. But they are young. If i pick them up they will calm down and let me snuggle them. They are sweet once they calm down. Just keep picking them up. Hold them close to your body right side up. (Some of my birds like me to pet their bellies and they will purr)

Try sitting on the ground and let them come to you. By lowering your height , you are far less scary. We use this tactic with our goats and ponies too. Have you ever seen how animals are drawn to little toddlers ? Just sit quietly with a plate of scrambled egg or a tin of sardines and let them initiate contact.

Trust me even if you do nothing once they are full grown they slow down a lot & will figure out that you are their friend! I have a cuckoo silkie female that was so skiddish when I first got her I figured she would never like me. Two month's later she is my favorite cuddle bug! It is just their nature!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll keeping working with them gently and try to patiently await the day when they become snuggly.

I have about 40 hens. All different breeds and sizes. After molt and time change I've been getting two eggs regularly. Both from one of the Silkie houses.
