Silkie thread!

I've had previous chickens but I'm a new silkie owner. The rest of my new flock love to come sit on my lap when I come out in the morning to give them a treat but my silkies want nothing to do with me. Also, is it unusual that the rest of my flock (who are all the same age as my silkies) let them steal their treats if the silkies get them away (they keep chasing anyone else who steals their treats) and the other night I came out to bring the silkies inside (it was a little colder than usual) to find that the others hadn't jumped up to their favorite sleeping place and were instead pig piled around the silkies. I was told that bigger chicks will pick on them because their so small but they seem to be more protective of the silkies. Did I just get an awesome flock or is this usual for their age (they're a month old)?

You do have an awesome flock. Being raised together, they will stick together. That is so sweet that they protected the silkies.

Yay. My last flock would have absolutely picked on my babies. They picked on my ameraucana. I'm having trouble finding pictures of silkies besides chicks and adults. Does anyone have pictures of adolescent silkies? I just want some frame of reference as to what to expect in growth and feather growth as they get older.

They just don't seem to be getting their head feathers yet and I want to know when them are going to start getting puffy. Haha

I take pic's of all my youngsters throughout their life so I have extensive files on every silkie I produce or hatch. This gives me an excellent idea of where my programs for each variety is going. I keep a journal on each hatch. Here are some of my chicks from two weeks to twelve weeks.

Day old

Two weeks

Five weeks

Another five week old

Eight weeks.

These are all hatched last year. Some strains develop slower and some faster. They can come out of the incubator the same time but different strains are different from each other.

oopps! Edited to add the flock of twelve week olds all in the yard last summer.

Thank you. That is very helpful.

Well done ! Sounds like your vet did their homework . It is very important to keep her in a clean environment whilst she heals. Be sure to pick up her poops regular while she is in confinement . The antibiotics in the water will help to knock out infection. I wish you and Franklin the best. :)
Don't forget to take pics of the healing process. Someone else may find them helpful.
