Silkie thread!

Diatomaceous earth is best for getting rid of mites. that's what i put on my chickens. it does become ineffective if it gets wet so your chickens have to be dry. you can also treat there run area as long as it hasn't rained. it will kill any crawling insects. it will do nothing for flying insects.

Save your money and don't use DE. It is not effective even as a preventative. I've researched manufacturers of DE and even they don't claim it is effective depending on where it's used, how long it takes to work, that there's no guarantee of killing insects, takes many applications for minimal long-term results, and manufacturers danced around answering my queries, etc. Save your chickens and other pets from respiratory issues by not exposing them to the DE dust. There are warnings to use gloves, masks, and eye protection with DE dust so how would you put those items on chickens to protect them?

Manna Pro Poultry Protector is an organic enzyme that works safely and immediately on chicks, chickens, and poultry coops for lice/mite prevention/treatment with exact and safe instructions on the label. The results were immediate on juveniles shipped to me with lice - and though not necessary I used a follow-up treatment a week later. For massive infestations a stronger treatment like pyrethrin(?spelling) or similar treatment might be necessary but let's hope no owner here has a problem that gets that bad.

Still there will be DE users that want to think the product is safe or effective so if that's the way you want to spend your money it's your choice. Read the warning labels and if that doesn't convince you then that's all that can be said.

I would like to find a place to order them from also but I don't want to order from somewhere across the country.

I am very happy with my pet Silkies from Ideal Poultry. They are not show quality but are Silkie Quality Good temperaments very friendly and one is brooding at 32 weeks.

If you order from a hatchery they will send packing peanuts (usually pre sexed cockrels) to fill the order to keep all the chicks alive for travel.

I would also wait until the mail catches up from the holidays to order from anywhere.

You can check this thread to see what is available in your area also.

Good luck

Thanks alot for the help. If it isn't to much trouble can someone explain what a cockrel is and anything like that. I know what a hen puller and rooster are. I think a cockrel is a young rooster but I didn't know that for sure.

It would be helpful if you listed your State, Province, or City in your bio pic's. That way you will get better responses to your queries. There are a lot of breeders on this thread and a lot of hatcheries in the U.S. and there are different Silkies i.e. bearded or non-bearded, Sizzles, etc. Most of us on BYC have a favorite breeder source for our birds so sharing your location will help us to help you.

Yes, a cockerel is a male chicken from birth to a year old and a pullet is a female chicken from birth up to a year old. A cock is a rooster over a year and a hen is over a year old.

Different breeds can hatch at different times of the year but usually Silkies will hatch Spring through Fall. Give yourself this opportunity to do some research about Silkies before it comes time to get them - they are a wonderful breed and it pays to know as much about them as possible because of their uniqueness.

Reading through this Silkie thread of over 5,000+ pages has the most valuable information I have ever encountered about Silkies from people who have them as pets all the way to dedicated show breeders.
