Silkie thread!

Hey there! New to chickens and now have a mixed flock of silkies and polish. I was wondering if silkies are lazy? The polish are constantly moving about, making noise and looking for something. The silkies are most of the day laying around napping. They do have moments of scratching and eating...looking for bugs, but not as much as the polish.

Also wondering if one of my silkies is a rooster...he/she stands up tall and looks around more then the others, and also seems to walk with his legs farther apart. Any thoughts?

check and see if their crests are getting in the way of their eyesight, after a trim, mine are much more active. Dont know about the roo, maybe post a pic?

I love those too! When I started out I searched everywhere for reds, and finally gave up. I was told they are the darkest buffs bred together until that color is reached? Beautiful birds, congrats!

I'm not sure exactly how it works but will be breeding them this fall to figure out to recreate more of them. I'll post pictures of the babies as they develop so everyone can see. Very excited to get them.

Ok thank you! I had to trim one of the girls recently because we raised their coop a little higher and she wouldn't go inside. I guess I need to trim more because she still won't go in. The other two silkies do but she hasn't made it in yet. They don't have as much poof on their heads.

The polish still have to be put in since I got them. I think they are afraid of the silkies since one of them pecks at them if they try to sleep with them. I am wanting to build a separate coop for them.

I will try to get picks tonight!

Ok, color experts. This is a one day old chick that hatched out of an egg from my blue Sizzle hen. I saw her lay it, so I know it was her! The roo was one of two white roos. The egg was laid the night I got her home from the breeder, but I know the only roo's in that pen are white. The baby is white (not buff, not cream colored- white!) with mahogany brown chipmunk stripes. What on earth is he/she/it? Gotta be partridge something, right? I'm clueless. IT is gorgeous in my opinion, though. Cannot wait to see what color it turns out to be when it gets bigger. Pics are bad, but best my iPhone can do.

The temp tomorrow is suppose to be in the 80's! Finally!!! It has been so stinkin hot here, I had to move all the silkie breeders into the basement. Were talking over 75 birds! Hello!!!!

But the good note, hubby used that break to make new breeding/growout pens in the barn. So they are all getting baths tomorrow & out to their new homes! Then the clean up in the basement starts in a major way! Thank goodness it's an unfinished basement.

I'm looking forward to getting the birds into new breeding groups, time to shake up the mix. It was fun doing egg auctions for the eggs that they had during their stay, but finding them wasn't so easy. The hens that were trying to go broody, stealing all the eggs around them were easy, the others were trying to hide the rest!
